He was accused of sexually assaulting a female co-worker in 2018. While he reportedly reached an agreement with the woman to settle the case with a seven-figure compensation sum, the courts in Taiwan came to a verdict today (April 14).
Acclaimed Taiwanese actor-director Doze Niu — best known for directing the Golden Horse Awards-winning film Monga — has been sentenced to four years in jail.
During sentencing, the judge noted that there was no affection between Doze and the woman. During the assault, she also clenched her lips and indicated her reluctance.
The prosecutor said the victim was a film crew member in Doze's film, and she did not fight back during the assault to protect her job.
However, Doze, 53, has all along denied the assault, claiming it was the woman who led him to think she was a willing party. Because of this, the judge passed a harsher sentence.
His lawyers said they will appeal against the sentence.
Earlier reports said the assault occurred on Nov 24, 2018, after a meeting at Doze's home in Taipei, when the other guests had left.
The woman later went to a hospital accompanied by a friend, and made a police report.
In December that year, Doze spoke to reporters after he was questioned by the police, saying: "I have faith and hope that there will be a fair trial. But there is another public trial going on now and I have already been handed a death sentence."
This is not the first time he has been accused of sexual misconduct. In 2007, he was accused of abusing his authority as director to kiss actress Janine Chang on the neck during the filming of TV drama Wayward Kenting.
In 2019, actress Christine Ke also told the media that she has been left psychologically scarred after she spent five hours shooting a nude scene with Doze for the film What On Earth Have I Done Wrong in 2007.
She added: "I was not protected by the very party (Niu was the director and main actor in that movie) who should have protected me; instead I was hurt (by him)."
