SINGAPORE — Former Mediacorp actor Huang Yi Liang was charged in court with assault with a weapon and fighting in public on Friday (29 November).
The 58-year-old showed up in court alone in a black-and-white striped shirt and blue jeans to hear two charges: one count each of causing hurt with a weapon and of committing affray.
His charges state that on 9 June 2019, at about 7.51pm on Buffalo Road, Huang fought with a man named Mogana Raj Saravanan, and hit him on the back of the head with a mobile phone. Huang is listed as a director of three companies, all of which have a registered address at 662 Buffalo Road, where the alleged offence is said to have taken place.
The charges further said that at the canteen of the Singapore Islamic Hub on 11 December 2018 at about 4.30pm, Huang injured a man named Jahidul using a metal scraper. Huang allegedly hit Jahidul twice on his abdomen and once on his head with the metal scraper, causing injuries to his scalp and abdomen.
Huang told the court that he intends to engage a lawyer. His case will be mentioned next on 20 December.
Huang won three Best Supporting Actor awards at the Star Awards during his career at Mediacorp. He was known for his role in Channel 8 sitcom My Genie as well as in the film I Not Stupid Too. He left Mediacorp in 2008.
He is now a director of a company dealing with wholesale timber products and two firms which provide cleaning services.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, Huang was also in court seven years ago for using violence on another person.
In 2012, Huang was fined $3,000 for assaulting a woman who did not clean up after her dog.
After noticing that she did not throw away her dog's faeces from inside his car, Huang drove up to her and the two had a heated exchange. He eventually alighted from the car and grabbed the woman by her neck, causing her to fall. He then held her down forcefully.
If convicted of causing hurt with a weapon, Huang faces up to seven years' jail and a fine. He cannot be caned as he is above 50 years of age.
If found guilty of committing affray, Huang faces a jail term of up to a year, and a maximum fine of $5,000.
