NEW ORLEANS — Memphis dropped its final road game of the 2020 season 35-21 against Tulane at Yulman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Memphis (6-3, 4-3 AAC) trailed 21-14 at halftime and turned the ball over on downs twice in the second half while Tulane (6-5, 3-5) was perfect on fourth down and produced several big plays to hold off the Tigers.

"They took it to us," said Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield. "The credit goes to Tulane. We didn't find a way to do what we needed to do and get a win."

Tigers undone by fourth down, big plays
Tulane converted two fourth-down attempts in the first half, both of which kept touchdown drives alive. The Green Wave also picked up a fourth-down conversion late in the game to clinch the victory and finish a perfect 3-of-3 on fourth-down attempts.

Memphis opted to go for it on fourth down three times and converted just one attempted as a result of a penalty.

Tulane also benefitted from several big play. The Green Wave had six passing plays of at least 15 yards and six rushes of at least 10 yards.

Right at home
Sophomore defensive back Quindell Johnson, a New Orleans native, had an interception and a forced fumble playing in his first collegiate game in his hometown. He also finished with six tackles.

"My friends and family don't get to see me play a lot in person, so playing in front of them was special," Johnson said. "Obviously, it wasn't the game I wanted, but it's a blessing to be able to play in front of them."

Johnson entered Saturday as the reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week after having 12 tackles and an interception in a 10-7 victory over Navy last week.

Record watch
Senior quarterback Brady White passed for 248 yards and is now just 56 yards shy of becoming Memphis' all-time leader in career passing yards. He also owns the school record for career touchdown passes (85) and wins as a starting quarterback (26).

White completed 19 of his 38 attempts with two touchdowns and two interceptions Saturday.

Another 100 for Austin III
Junior wide receiver Calvin Austin III had five receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown, as he eclipsed 100 receiving yards for the sixth time in the last seven games.

Austin III also had at least 100 receiving yards against UCF (Oct. 17), Temple (Oct. 24), Cincinnati (Oct. 31), USF (Nov. 7) and Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 21).

Up next
Memphis concludes its regular season against Houston next Saturday at the Liberty Bowl. Kickoff time has not yet been announced.

"The only response that we're going to have is to pick ourselves up of this mat and keep swinging," Silverfield said. "That response is going to start right now and I told the team what we do from here is ultimately how we will be defined."
