I think your writers are forgetting to celebrate another holiday in December besides Christmas. Perhaps your readers would like to read about it. On Dec. 21, a Monday, it’s National Short Girl Appreciation Day!! And it’s about time!
Many of us 5 feet and under remember when in 1977 Randy Newman cut a record called “Short People,” a mean-spirited song which made fun of us. Among other insulting lines in his song were these: “Short People have no reason to live,” and “They got little hands and little eyes,” and “They walk around telling big fat lies.”
I think you would agree that this is shameful. The problems of short people are many. People call us “Shorty” and sometimes pat us on the head.
Everything I buy, like skirts, dresses or slacks, has to be shortened. When I go to a grocery store I have to flirt with some tall guy to get something off the top shelf. In my coy voice I say, “You’re sooo tall - could you get that bottle off the top shelf for me?” Literally, short people have to look up to everyone. As a teacher I once went into a new class where the kids all yelled, “Yay! there’s no teacher!”
Even my wonderful dad would tell me, “You know, Peg, you might make a lot of money in your life, but you’ll always be a little short.” (It was funny the first 1,000 times.). I never start a story with “When I was a little girl,” because someone is bound to say, “You still are.” So, I hope that on the special day for short people this year, you’ll get down to our level and say, “I so appreciate you, you wonderful short person.” Then, I and many of my fellow sufferers, will have a Merry Christmas!
