Out of jail, but Singapore DJ Tenashar's legal woes mount up - AsiaOne

Troubled Singaporean celebrity DJ Tenashar has been back in court on new charges this month. She is accused of failing to provide urine tests after serving time for drug offences and impersonating a social worker in an attempt to get her passport back.

The DJ - whose real name is Debbie Valerie Tenashar Long - was first arrested in Oct 2015 after a two-week trip to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She was found in possession of psilocin - a banned substance found in most psychedelic mushrooms - and tested positive for cocaine.

Long was granted bail and fled the country, only returning to Singapore when her passport expired in May 2018. She was sentenced to 18 months in jail the same month. After being released early in May 2019, Long failed to report to Jurong Police Division headquarters for three scheduled urine tests between July 22 and 29 last year.

She is now also charged with one count of attempted cheating by impersonation in an alleged attempt to retrieve her passport. In Dec 2019, she allegedly impersonated an employee of the Singapore Association of Social Workers in an email requesting the return of her passport, sent to the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA).

Long was subject to two years of supervision after her release from prison, and forbidden from leaving Singapore without approval. However, on July 4, Long allegedly left Singapore without approval.

The next day, she was found asleep on a hotel lobby couch in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, where she was not registered as a guest. The Singaporean DJ claimed she had been kidnapped, robbed and beaten by a group of men who were commissioned by a Singaporean narcotics officer in charge of her case.

However, Malaysian police suspected Long was under the influence of drugs, arrested her and tested her for banned substances. The tests came back positive.

She was released on bail and returned to Singapore, where, two days later, she was caught breaking and entering a home on Edgware Road. Singaporean authorities arrested her that night on both trespassing and drug-related offences.

The 34-year-old, who was known for her sexually charged performances, became the resident DJ at Singapore's Avalon Nightclub in 2009. She also made a string of appearances in men's magazines, gracing the cover of FHM Singapore in 2012 and the Thailand version of Playboy in 2013.

That same year, she became the first Singaporean to appear on British music magazine DJ Mag's list of the world's top 100 DJs, coming in at No 87. She signed a deal with Universal Music Group in 2015, the year her life appeared to spiral out of control.

In an interview with The Straits Times a week after being released last year, Long claimed she was not aware she had consumed drugs and accused her then-boyfriend of framing her by placing the psilocin in her luggage.

A month later, the same newspaper published an interview with Long explaining that she saw her jail term in Changi Women's Prison as a "blessing in disguise" and announcing that she planned to be an anti-drug ambassador. Soon after, she tested positive for drugs on two separate occasions.

For failing to attend the scheduled urine tests, Long could be jailed up to four years and fined $10,000 per charge. If found guilty of cheating by impersonation, Long could be jailed up to five years.

The celebrity DJ, who has a 13-year-old daughter in the care of her ex-husband, was granted bail of $15,000 after her latest court appearance on March 6 and is due back in court on April 3.
