The durian might be the stinkiest fruit around but it has a special power.
It can charge your phone at lightning fast speeds, according to scientists.
According to researchers from the University of Sydney, the durian and its cousin, the jackfruit, has qualities that allow them to store huge amounts of energy.
But how?

Vincent Gomes and his team discovered that the gut of both fruits can be transformed into supercapacitors.
Inside a supercapacitor are two plates that are separate within it that are made out of metal.

These plates are coated with substances such as charcoal and electrode material that can be used to charge objects.
In their study, published by Popular Mechanics, both the fruits are now ideal candidates for energy storage because the fruits have the amazing ability to maintain full battery cycles.
What can it power?

According to Gomes, the fruits would be able to assist in powering up a supercapacitor that's used to power up portable medical devices, batteries, transport vehicles, and yes, your phone.
The researchers managed to create a carbon aerogel from the durians. What's a carbon aerogel? Ever seen silica packets found in food packaging and at times in shoe box to keep moisture away? Well, Gomes and his team discovered that creating one out of the durian and the jackfruit gave the supercapacitor its needed oomph.
Other fruits such as the watermelon and pomelo had been experimented upon but it's the durian and the jackfruit that outperformed the rest.
How come?

According to the team's research, the answer lies within the body of the fruits itself.
The durian's “fibruous, fleshy” organic waste has excellent "mechanical stability" making it an ideal candidate.
Gomes believes that if the process is adopted by manufacturers of electrical storage, it would make a huge difference for the environment.
"Converting food wastes into value-added products will not only improve the overall economy but also reduce environmental pollution," he said.
Nice. Now, how are we going to contend with the smell, though?
