Welcome back, and happy Friday everyone. MLB seems to have pulled off the short pandemic season, some slight hiccups notwithstanding. My question for you is this: did you enjoy having only 60 games in the season?
There has long been a faction of baseball fans that have called for a shorter season. 162 games over the course of 5+ months has been called a slog by many. I wouldn’t put myself in this crowd, but I do have to admit there has been many a season where my attention wanes with the dog days of summer. With so many games, you never get the feeling that they all really matter.
However, in this COVID-shortened season, there has been much discourse about the importance of each and every game. With so few games, every loss, every cold streak, is magnified. Just look at this past week, for example. At the end of the disappointing White Sox series, the Twins were given only a 6.7% chance at winning the division. However, after the White Sox dropped 5 in a row and the Twins trended upwards, Minnesota now finds itself with a full game’s lead in the division, a 67% chance at winning the division, with only 3 games to go. Say what you will about the short season, but it hasn’t been lacking in tension.
In my opinion, I prefer the 162-game season. I enjoy the grind of the long season. I prefer seeing more teams as opponents throughout the year, seeing which hot streaks are for real and which are only small-sample size luck, and which young players get a chance to break out later in the season. We almost certainly would’ve gotten a little taste of Alex Kirilloff (and maybe even Royce Lewis) had the Twins gone through the ringer of a full season. The White Sox would have been tested against more good teams (of which they have a losing record against, but that’s none of my business) and maybe their fans could’ve gotten a healthy dose of reality as they regressed to the mean. I think the world would be a better place if this was the case.
On the other hand, this has been an interesting and enjoyable sprint. Every high is higher and every low is lower, and there’s definitely some fun in that. I wouldn’t be completely opposed to perhaps a 100- or 120-game season, where the intensity is turned up a little bit from the 162-game format, but there is still a healthier sample size for us to observe and enjoy. At the end of the day, I was just happy to have some baseball this year.
Now it’s your turn! Let us know in the comments what you thought of the shortened season, or what you may have missed from the full-length season!
