Black Widow: First Official Trailer Breakdown - IGN Southeast Asia

The first official trailer for Black Widow has been released, and we've combed every last frame to uncover the coolest character introductions, subtle plot clues, and emotional Easter eggs hidden throughout.

Set in the two-year gap between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlett Johnasson reprises her role as the assassain-turned-Avenger, Natasha Romanoff, in her first solo adventure.

As to be expected, there are a spate of character introductions and family reunions in the thrilling new footage, with one early shot showing Natasha entering an apartment complex to face a blast from the past in the shape of "sis" Yelena Bolova (Florence Pugh). The pair engage in a vigorous tussle, demonstrating their equally matched skills, before teaming up to deal with some "unfinished business."

Facing multiple threats and challenges, the deadly duo reunite with Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), who is impressed by the fact that he "still fits" into his Red Guardian suit, as he is joined by Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weiss), rounding out the medley of mercenaries at the rendezvous point. In the comics, Melina famously lives in the shadow of the Black Widow before transforming into the supervillain known as The Iron Maiden, so this family affair could breakdown a lot sooner than we think.

In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot from this scene, Yelena is spotted wearing the same black and green vest worn by Black Widow in Infinity War, which seems to indicate an uncertain fate for her character in this film, though equally, it could go on to serve as a memento from Nat and Yelena's mission together this time around.

As well as confronting her past, Natasha is on the run from Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt), the troublesome Civil War character intent on hunting her down. A short soundbite spliced atop the footage seems to suggest the pair are in contact with one another, though there is a chance this could be a flashback clip or a separate interaction altogether since Nat and Thad aren't on-screen together during this exchange.

In some further quick-fire shots, an army of prospective new Widows appear to be training in the Red Room facility while, elsewhere, a fleet of flying super-soldiers take formation for an action-packed sequence. There's every possibility that the mysterious masked crew are working with Taskmaster, the primary antagonist in the film, who showcases his photographic reflexes in his head-to-head battle with Red Guardian. Interestingly, big Red doesn't seem to have the back-up of his teammates in this tense standoff, which suggests he may have been unexpectedly targeted.

We'll find out when Black Widow hits theaters on May 1st, 2020.
