Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic Scores Revealed - IGN Southeast Asia

The review embargo for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has lifted, and the critical response to the final movie in the Skywalker Saga is decidedly mixed. Now that enough critic reviews have been released, the two main review aggregator sites -- Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic -- have released their Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker review aggregate scores.

Both scores are comparable with each other: the Rotten Tomatoes review score for The Rise of Skywalker is currently sitting at 56 percent based on an aggregate of 117 reviews, while the Metacritic review score for Rise of Skywalker is currently sitting at 53 based on an aggregate of 32 pro critic reviews. Both sites announced the aggregate scores now that the review embargo on the film has lifted.

This is by far the lowest aggregate review score for any of the new Star Wars movies since Disney's Lucasfilm acquisition in 2012. On both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, it is the second-poorest reviewed Star Wars movie, in both cases sitting above The Phantom Menace.

Keep reading to see how The Rise of Skywalker's Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores compare to the other Star Wars movies, including the prequels.

IGN's Jim Vejvoda reviewed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as a 7.0, or "Good," writing, "For as much love, passion, and nostalgia is evident in this movie, it’s also a film very palpably made from a place driven by fear of disappointing the audience, and that anxiety fuels a lot of the story’s curious creative choices and unwieldy execution. The film’s heartstring-tugging moments, technical impressiveness, and relentless action will likely be enough for those fans who just want to keep the visor down on their blast shield helmets and let the Force flow through them.

"But for those who need some consistency and logic to the story in this elaborately detailed fictional galaxy, there will likely be the bittersweet pang of accepting that this long-running saga couldn’t quite stick the landing. But even at its most divisive and imperfect, the Star Wars franchise has offered much to embrace and celebrate. This finale to the Skywalker Saga is, if nothing else, a tribute to that legacy."

See how IGN reviewed every modern Star Wars movie in the gallery below:

Even though the Skywalker Saga is ending, there is plenty more Star Wars on the way. The movies will be going on a hiatus for a couple of years, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently said that the movies would deviate from the trilogy format going forward. "What we've been focused on these last five or six years is finishing that family saga around the Skywalkers," she said. "Now is the time to start thinking about how to segue into something new and different."

Though the next Star Wars movie is slated for a December 16, 2022 release, it's unclear what it will be about. All we know is the movie already has found its director (though we don't know who it is), and it's not a part of Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy.

In the interim, we will have plenty of Star Wars series on Disney+ to keep us busy. The Mandalorian just aired Episode 7 (read our review) and is heading into its season finale, airing the Friday after The Rise of Skywalker's release.

There's also the final season of The Clone Wars coming in February 2020, an untitled Cassian Andor series and an untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi show starring Ewan McGregor on the horizon. Here is everything Star Wars currently available on Disney+.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 19 in the UK and Australia and on December 20 in the United States.
