The Hokies (5-3, 4-3 ACC) drop their second straight match on the road. NC State (3-4, 3-4) continue their winning ways claiming their third straight victory this season. Head coach Luka Slabe takes his first meeting against the Hokies.
Three Hokies reached seven kills against the Wolfpack including outside hitter Kaity Smith, middle blocker Marisa Cerchio and graduate student Ashley Homan. Setter Talyn Jackson dished out 10 assists and sophomore Logan Mosley scooped up 15 digs in the loss.
Smith moved into sole possession of fifteenth all-time at Virginia Tech in kills and now sits with 1,037 in her career. Smith passes Tech alum Jaila Tolbert who is at 1,030 kills.
In the victory, NC State saw strong performances from senior Melissa Evans and junior Jade Parchment who each registered 16 kills. Setter Kristen McDaniel dished out 32 assists in the win marking 126 assists over the last three matches.
THE GAME
The first set was a close contest throughout. The stanza was even at 26-26 when senior Evans recorded a key kill to bring the Wolfpack up one point. NC State would finish off the set and take the first 28-26.
The second set was all Wolfpack from the jump as they took a 6-0 advantage early on. The Hokies attempted to mount a comeback and brought the score to 19-15. NC State would rattle off a 3-0 run which would prove to be too much as the Wolfpack took the second 25-18.
NC State came out firing in the third stanza and took a 13-7 lead. NC State would then go on a 10-0 spurt which would be too much to handle for Tech. The Wolfpack closed out the set 25-14 and won the match 3-0.
MATCH NOTES
- Smith tallied seven kills and leads Tech in kills with 107 through eight matches.
- Libero Mosley has recorded 15 or more digs in her last five matches.
- As a team, the Hokies had more blocks than NC State in the match with a 9-7 margin.
- Junior Jackson earned her eighth consecutive match with double-digit assists.
