Raleigh, N.C. — Chef Doreen Colondres has hosted three cooking shows airing in 16 different countries, but she always wanted to open a wine school.
"I always dreamed about having a school where people can feel like they're coming to my house," Colondres said of opening Vitis House Wine School in Raleigh in 2019.
The school, located at The Loading Dock, features classes for all levels of wine enthusiasts, including Wine Scholar Guild and Wine & Spirit Education Trust courses.
"One of my clients is a pharmaceutical company. They took me here to do a cooking show for the employees of the City of Raleigh. And I don't know what happened that day. I only spent like 36 hours in the city. I fall in love with everything and I was like, this is my place for the school," Colondres said on this week's WRAL Out and About Podcast.
Colondres loved to cook as a child, but after college found her way into the world of marketing, working with multinational companies in the food industry.
"Then one day I was like, 'No, this is not me. I want to cook full time,'" Colondres said.
That decision led her to appearing on cooking shows for Univision, NBC Telemundo and FOX.
"At some point I had three different cooking shows with FOX, and they were airing those in like 16 different countries," Colondres said.
When the pandemic is over, Colondres plans to start offering cooking classes at Vitis House.
Vitis House has a few fun classes in February for Valentine's Day, including a Romantic Reds class that explores the unique Italian grape varieties used to produce “romantic wines." See a list of all classes on the Vitis House website.
