I’m A Celeb 2021: Why Mel Buttle turned down reality show for years - NEWS.com.au

Comedian Mel Buttle has revealed why she turned down several offers to appear on I’m A Celeb in the past.

The popular personality finally said yes to appearing on this season of the reality show, but she didn’t last long, quitting the show due to her phobia of snakes.

Speaking to news.com.au, Buttle said her phobia was the main reason she’d rejected so many offers to appear on the show in the past.

“I did initially say no (to this season) and I’ve said no for a number of years,” Buttle said. “It was just a flat out no. I didn’t want to have further conversations, I was like, ‘No, that’s the snake show.’”

But the producers had “a lot of phone calls” with Buttle and eventually convinced her to say yes.

“They start asking more questions about why you’re saying no and then bing bang bong, you’ve got your singlet on and hat on your head and you’re on a log talking to Grant Denyer,” Buttle joked.

Given she has such a strong fear of snakes, some might be scratching their heads as to why Buttle said yes to appearing on a show set in the jungle.

Speaking to news.com.au, Buttle said her mind was put at ease by producers who assured her they would keep snakes away from the camp site.

“What I thought was, this is a telly show, they’re going to keep up safe,” Buttle said. “They’ve obviously made this show before, they know what they’re doing, they’re not going to let snakes climb all over us in bed.”

News.com.au asked Buttle if producers had cut her a deal that meant she wouldn’t have to take part in any challenges that involved snakes, such as the one that saw Toni Pearen get bitten on the face by jungle carpet pythons.

Buttle paused before a Channel 10 publicist cut in and said, “Let’s not go there.”

When Buttle left the camp site, she joked to her co-stars: “I know I’m going to regret it, but I can always go on Bachelor In Paradise”.

Given the show was prerecorded weeks ago, we asked Buttle if she does now regret her decision to quit the show so early.

“If I had my time again I think I would still make the same decision,” Buttle told news.com.au. “I’ve thought about it a lot over the past few weeks. I don’t regret it but I certainly miss my other camp mates.”

The comedian also revealed that it wasn’t just a fear of snakes that had put her off saying yes to the show in the past. Buttle was also worried about encountering some not-so-nice celebs.

“That was my fear up there with snakes,” Buttle told news.com.au. “I was like, ‘They’re going to put in a mean person who’s going to create conflict and I’m not going to cope because I hate fights.”

But that wasn’t the case at all, Buttle said.

“Everyone was an angel. There was not a single piece of tension or conflict that I witnessed. We just got on.”

I’m A Celeb continues tonight on Channel 10 at 7.30pm
