Short shorts? In winter? Justin Bieber says yes! - British GQ

siantarkalo.blogspot.com

All right, all right, don't get your brain cogs in a twist. We know it's currently three degrees Celsius in the UK (at least it is in the Home Counties living room in which this piece is being written) and, of course, we're aware that we're on the precipice of a third national lockdown, but in our opinion both of these are facts that mean it's time to turn to some style moves so unexpected you'll fool yourself into thinking things aren't totally and utterly shit.

Take, for instance, the act of wearing short shorts in winter, in the style of Mr Hailey Baldwin himself, one Justin Bieber.

Sure, he lives in the perpetually sunny climes of Los Angeles and, yes, he can kind of wear anything and get away with it, but the truth is the look Bieber rocked on Instagram this past Sunday – all teeny-tiny black shorts and a massive oversized sweatshirt – felt lockdown-appropriate wherever in the world you may currently be.

Like a young Princess Di en route to the gym, there was something easy-going and understated about Bieber's look: the kind of thing overeager rugby dads would have worn on the sidelines of their kid's games back in the day, in a bid to “stimulate blood flow” in their legs – and God knows we all need some extra stimulation right now.

What's more, we are currently living through extraordinarily restrictive times, which means you probably want to wear clothes that are as unrestrictive as possible. In our humble opinion, therefore, you should turn up the heating to 25C, stick some short shorts on and hunker down until spring.

Failing that, you could just get ahead on what looks set to be one of this summer's most prominent trends. Short shorts have been doing the rounds for some time now, but when it comes to our impending summer of love – the second Roaring Twenties – you can expect to see more fully exposed legs than ever before stalking the streets of the UK.

Here are the best shorts to buy right now if you want to get ahead of the trend…

1. The denim ones

Team with an oversized grey marl sweatshirt à la Bieber this winter or thrown on with a white vest and billowy silk shirt come spring. Either way, you'll wear them to death.

2. The sporty ones

Part of Hedi Slimane's “The Dancing Kid” collection for LVMH-owned brand Celine, these 1980s-infused gym-style shorts would work excellently with some navy long johns this winter, just as they will with a teeny-tiny band tee come summer.

3. The jazzy ones

Very Bieber, these bad boys. Created by Hungarian brand Nanushka, these shorts toe the line between swimmers and Bermudas and fit neatly into the current animal print trend without looking garish. Wear over black running leggings right now or with clashing animal print when the second summer of love well and truly kicks in.
