Tyrese Haliburton has been an absolute delight so far this season, and his teammates have gone out of their way to say how much they enjoy playing with him and how happy they are to have him on their side.
There is one Haliburton quirk, however, that hasn’t gotten universal acclaim from his Sacramento teammates: his short shorts. When you’re watching the Kings, it’s hard not to notice the length of his shorts relative to the other players on the court. Haliburton often wears tights underneath, but it still stands out.
“They get on me all the time, Hassan (Whiteside) was just talking to me about it the other day like why I wear my shorts so small, and it’s just something I do,” Haliburton said after practice Tuesday. “I started doing it in high school. It was just that trend started to come back, you know, every trend comes back eventually so it’s just something I started doing. And I just ran with it and that was kind of how I was known. Everybody knew I was gonna wear smaller shorts.”
Aside from keeping up with fashion trends — the Kings rookie maintains that a lot of people his age wear shorter shorts — Haliburton says that at this point, it’s just habit to keep pulling up his shorts, despite efforts from other parties to prevent him from doing so.
“I don’t have any superstitions or anything, but I don’t like — I hate when my shorts touch my knees or anything,” Haliburton. “So no matter what size shorts that our equipment manager Miguel (Lopez) gives me, I’m gonna roll them at least once. And I know that the league probably hates it, Nike probably hates it. I know Nike hated it when I was in college. I used to roll them twice and you could see the tag, so they’d send me shorter ones and then I would still roll them twice, and they didn’t like that. So it’s just what I do.”
Haliburton did give one possible explanation for why he happened upon short shorts in the first place, passing the blame to a Hall of Famer. The former Laker has already blessed the “little Magic” nickname for Haliburton, so it’s only fitting that he take credit for Haliburton’s sartorial choices as well.
“I don’t know why, I don’t exactly know why,” Haliburton said. “You guys know I used to watch a lot of 80s early basketball, so maybe just watching Magic (Johnson) or something got me doing that. It’s probably his fault.”
Right now, there’s a lot more to love about Haliburton than find fault with, and if short shorts remain the the biggest of his issues, the Kings will be perfectly happy with that outcome.
