Check facts: MEA on celeb tweets - The Tribune India

New Delhi, February 3

The Centre on Wednesday slammed the remarks made by top international celebrities and activists on farmers’ protests, saying the facts on the issue must be ascertained before rushing to comment on it.

The government claimed that the reactions were prompted by vested groups that were behind the Red Fort violence. “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” said the MEA in a statement.

It said it was unfortunate to see groups having vested interests trying to enforce their agenda on these protests as was seen on January 26.

“Parliament, after a full debate and discussion, passed the laws, which will give expanded market access and provide greater flexibility to farmers. The laws will also pave the way for economically and ecologically sustainable farming,” it said to counter child environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s opinion.

The MEA said it was a “very small section of farmers who have some reservations” about these reforms.
