Masked Singer Season 5: How The New Wildcard Celeb Twist Will Work - Screen Rant

Fox dropped a bomb on fans of The Masked Singer, announcing a brand new "Wildcard" twist. While the format of the show has changed slightly each season, this is the most significant change fans have seen yet. The announcement had left fans with more questions than answers. Will the wildcard contestants have fewer opportunities for clues? How will the twist work and more importantly what impact will it have on the game? A closer look at the format can provide some answers.

In the past, the singers have been broken down into smaller groups labeled A, B, and C. How the groups are presented is where the changes have come into play. Viewers have seen formats where one group would perform for weeks in a row until they were down to two or three who would then join a semifinal group and then other seasons have had the groups rotate their performances. Fans got a chance to get to know each group well as they performed week after week. This season will keep the groups but beyond that is where the new twist changes the show dramatically.

The anonymous celebrities will be split into only two groups of five. While fans will have the normal opportunity to get to know groups A and B as they normally would but the newly introduced wildcards will jump in during specially designated rounds to rock the boat a bit as they attempt to win a chance to compete for the Golden Mask. With only a few costumes exposed so far, it's unclear whether fans will get to see the Wildcard costumes in advance or just the 10 singers from the main groups. Another thing unclear is how the clue packages will work.

Normally fans get a clue package each week for each performer. If fans do not get clues in advance for the disrupters it will make their identities that much harder to guess. Fox also releases clues for the entire season's cast. It is likely these will include the Wildcards but without more information available on those singers the full season clues could end up being less useful as a prediction tool than they've been in the past. Or if the wildcards come on and are unmasked all in one episode it could make it much easier to check off certain accolades with more reveals.

It's also unclear if these players will only be on for one show or if more than one will join at a time. Since Fox has said there will be wildcard rounds, plural, it is safe to rule out the possibility of all coming on for the same episode. So many questions still remain but one thing is for sure this season will be even more unpredictable and exciting than the previous four. With Niecy Nash stepping in for host Nick Cannon, this season already has plenty of surprises. Fans are already scouring The Masked Singer social media accounts hoping for more costume reveals and any other announcements about the new twist. Masked Singer fever has begun.
