The Gopher men's gymnastics team fell by a score of 407.700-397.800 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln Saturday afternoon. This marks the halfway point of the Maroon & Gold's 2021 campaign, as they will now have a two week break period for the Winter Cup before returning to action Mar. 6 against Penn State.
Notable
Junior Mike Moran captured his second straight all-around title of the season by posting a career high score of 80.550. The last Gopher to win back to back all-around titles for the Maroon & Gold was Shane Wiskus, who won all-around titles at the Windy City Open and against Illinois last season.
Quotable
"Each week we're making progress and jumping 10 points from last week's performance is a good sign," head coach Mike Burns said. "We were able to get David Pochinka back in the lineup after he missed last week and that made a big difference on pommels, rings, and pbars. Mike Moran continues to improve with another all-around title and new personal best. This bodes well as he prepares for the Winter Cup in two weeks where he'll be joined by Crew Bold and Shane Wiskus. We're still having some dismount issues that we'll be addressing these next two weeks in training. We're leaving seven points out there on the floor just on dismount errors so we'll be working hard to shore up that area."
All-Around
Mike Moran was the only member of the Maroon & Gold to compete in the all-around competition on the day, and his career high score of 80.550 helped in the junior capturing his second consecutive all-around title following his 79.000 point all-around win last week at Ohio State.
Floor Exercise
The Gophers had a slow start on floor to get things going in Lincoln, as all-arounder Mike Moran finished with the highest score for Minnesota by logging a 13.900, which tied him for sixth overall. Colton Dee earned the second highest score for the Gophers in the event with his 13.700.
NEB: 71.400, UMN: 65.600
Pommel Horse
A pair of Gophers were able to find themselves with top three scores on pommel horse for the Maroon & Gold, with freshman Noah Duran (13.600) and junior David Pochinka (13.500) finishing No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Duran's score of 13.600 sets a new career high for the freshman, as he passes his previous career high of 12.900 from the team's season opener against Iowa.
NEB: 66.850, UMN: 65.700
Still Rings
The Maroon & Gold would again come up short to Nebraska on still rings, with sophomore Crew Bold logging the highest score of the day for the team with his third place earning score of 13.250. Further down the board, both Moran and Pochinka found themselves tied at sixth overall in the event with matching 13.000's.
NEB: 65.800, UMN: 64.750
Vault
Minnesota was able to put their best event score of the day together on vault thanks in large part to Moran's third place score of 14.650 along with captain Tyler Davis setting a new career high with a score of14.350 to earn himself fifth place in the event. Despite these huge performances for the team, the Maroon & Gold still fell just 0.200 points short of the Cornhuskers, who won the team event title.
NEB: 71.500, UMN: 71.300
Parallel Bars
The Maroon & Gold were able to put together a performance on parallel bars that gave them their lone team event title of the day, with members of the Gophers tying for third and fifth place overall. Donte McKinney's career high score of 13.450 locked him into the top three, tying him for third with Nebraska's Evan Hymanson. His teammates Mike Moran and David Pochinka tied yet again on the day, this time for fifth with parallel bars scores of 13.400. These scores along with solid scores by Crew Bold (12.900) and Noah Duran (12.850) helped the team win parallel bars by 0.650 points.
UMN: 66.000, NEB: 65.350
High Bar
The Gophers capped off their day with a pair of solid individual performances on high bar, led by Crew Bold who took home the event title with his score of 13.600. Donte McKinney also put together a top three performance by clinching third place with a score of 13.450. Despite the pair of sophomores earning high bar gold and bronze, the team's overall score wasn't enough to get by Nebraska, who took their fifth team event title of the day to help clinch the win over Minnesota.
NEB: 66.800, UMN: 64.450
The Road Ahead
The Gophers will now enter a two week bye period with no team competitions for Winter Cup preparation and the Winter Cup, which is set to take place Feb. 26-28. The team will then return to action Saturday, Mar. 6 when they host Penn State at the Maturi Pavilion starting at 12:00 p.m. CST.
