ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Owen Power scored a second-period goal, but the Wolverines' offense was unable to muster enough late scoring to overcome a hardworking Badgers squad on Sunday evening (Feb. 14), as the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell, 3-2, to No. 7 Wisconsin. With the loss, U-M earned a split against the Badgers.

Strauss Mann came up with a litany of critical saves throughout the contest, stopping 31 of 34 shots to keep the game close while shouldering the loss.

Each team had an early power-play opportunity, but neither side could convert on their first chances of the evening. Later at even strength, it was Mann who came up big to keep it scoreless when Cole Caufield was stoned on a wide-open look eight minutes into play. Caufield entered the weekend on a 12-game point streak, but was held scoreless by the Wolverine defense over the course of the two-game series.

With 8:51 left in the opening stanza, the Badgers found the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead for the second consecutive game off a beautiful wrist shot, crossbar and in.

After one period of play, Wisconsin (14-8-0, 12-6-0-0 Big Ten) held its one-goal lead, while outshooting U-M, 7-5. In a period full of whistles and stoppages, the Wolverines won a majority of faceoffs, 15-13.

The home team killed off a minor penalty in the opening minutes of the second period before carrying the play in search of a game-tying goal. With 7:25 left, Power collected a pass in the slot, stickhandled around a defender, went backhand-to-forehand and elevated it past the Badgers' netminder to get Michigan (11-7-0, 9-7-0-1 Big Ten) on the scoresheet and tie the game at 1. Classmates Kent Johnson and Thomas Bordeleau collected assists on the goal for each player's 20th point of the season. With the assist, Bordeleau has a point in 10 consecutive games.

Wisconsin's power-play unit, ranked third in the nation entering Sunday's contest, finally converted on their third opportunity of the evening about five minutes later. Mann made several fantastic saves to fend off a scrum in front of the crease, but a Badger forward was eventually able to extract the puck from the net-front area and lift it over the U-M netminder to give Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

Freshman forward Philippe Lapointe had a great chance to score in the final minute of the middle period when he deflected a point shot from Power that just skittered wide of the UW net.

With 40 minutes in the books, UW held a one-goal a 2-1 lead and outshot Michigan, 21-17.

The Badgers added to their lead early in the third period on a bang-bang play from close to the net that made it 3-1 in favor of the visitors.

Michigan's leading goal-scorer, Michael Pastujov, had a wrist shot stymied on a dangerous chance from inside the dot just before the midpoint of the period.

With time waning and the deficit at two goals, the Wolverines pulled Mann for an extra attacker. Moments later, Brendan Brisson blasted a slap shot from the right point that trickled through the opposing netminder's pads at 17:35 to bring the score to 3-2. Cam York and Bordeleau assisted on the tally that pulled the Wolverines within one goal of tying it up. The goal extended Brisson's points streak to four games.

While searching for the game-tying goal, U-M was assessed a bench minor penalty for too many men on the ice. Despite the adversity, the Wolverines pulled Mann once again and initiated several last-gasp rushes down the ice. As the final horn sounded, a small scrum closed out the weekend split in traditional fashion for the old rivals.

Next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 19-20), the Wolverines travel south to Columbus, for a two-game set against Ohio State. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. start times.
