DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers are giving Zack Short the chance to stick around for more than just one day.
Short, a 26-year-old infielder, was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to serve as the 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader. He ended up starting both games at shortstop and he doubled and homered in Game 1.
That was enough for the Tigers to decide to keep him around. After the second game, instead of returning Short to Toledo, they optioned infielder Isaac Paredes instead.
“One of these days, he won’t have to go back (to Triple-A Toledo),” manager A.J. Hinch said after Game 1 in comments that foreshadowed the move. “I don’t know when that’s going to be, but it’s his job to control what he can control.”
Paredes, 22, was recalled seven days ago to take the spot of injured shortstop Niko Goodrum. He went 1-for-7 with three walks in limited action since being called up and is 4-for-28 with the Tigers overall this year.
This is Short’s fourth stint with the Tigers in 2021. All of them have been brief. He’s 6-for-15 with five walks and nine strikeouts, including three in Game 2.
The Tigers’ primary interest in Short probably has more to do with defense. The Tigers have struggled defensively at shortstop, even after moving Willi Castro to second base. Willi Castro has split time with Paredes at the position over the last week.
