A Greeley native intends to run for city council this year, hoping to focus on strengthening the good things about the city and improving its weaknesses.

Sean Short will run for the Greeley City Council Ward 2 position. Brett Payton holds the position and was elected to serve from 2017 to 2021. Earlier this year, Payton announced he’s running for the at-large seat.

Ward 2 encompasses the southeast portion of the city, including downtown and the University of Northern Colorado.

In addition to Payton, Mayor John Gates, Ward 3 representative Michael Fitzsimmons and at-large representative Kristin Zasada will end their current terms at the end of the year. Gates announced his reelection campaign in February.

Short said in his announcement release that local politicians often have flyers or signs outlining their goals and priorities, but they don’t always follow through. He said they are “disconnected” from residents and their actual needs, saying representatives “seem to lack honesty about their true motives.”

“We deserve someone who grew up in the community because they know the people who are involved with our schools and contribute to our economy,” Short wrote in his campaign announcement. “This person better understands the locals and where there are jobs. This experience is essential to any decision concerning local education and jobs.”

Short attended Dos Rios, Chappelow and the now-closed John Evans as a child, and he delivered newspapers for the Greeley Tribune for his first job. He attended high school in Colorado Springs before earning a degree in molecular biology from the University of Hawaii.

As a horticulture adviser for Colorado State’s extension campus and operator of Blooming Health Farms, Short understands the importance of clean water and strong agriculture.

He also understands the need for oil and gas. Short previously worked for a company that recycled wastewater from hydraulic fracturing into safe, reusable water.

“We deserve someone who understands our major industries and cares for the environment. We are leaders in agriculture and energy production so we all benefit from what comes out of the ground,” Short said. “The soil provides feed and the extracted oil and gases fuel our lives. Someone with a science background and field experience will make decisions based on science and human factors.”

Lastly, Short said he believes in mentoring and working for all people, even when external pressure makes it difficult. He wants to advocate for facing challenges together to create a city that represents all of its residents.

If elected, Short would serve from 2022 until 2026.

“I will use my experience to give a voice that echoes who we really are and what we want,” Short said. “This Nov. 2, we get to choose who will best represent our city. A vote for me says you want someone who will listen and act in the best interest of the people of Ward 2.”
