NEWTON, Mass. - The University of Maine kicked off their 2021 fall season in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon, as they came up just short in a thrilling bid to upset No. 7-ranked Boston College.
Hana Davis, the reigning America East Midfielder of the Year and Second Team All-American, put up the first goal of the season in the first quarter off a Sydney Meader assist. The 1-0 Black Bear lead lasted into the third quarter, when the Eagles finally snuck the equalizer past Mia Borley. Borley finished the day with eight saves, seven of which came in the second half and overtime periods.
The fourth quarter saw Davis' second tally of the day, assisted by the 2019 America East Defensive Player of the Year Cassandra Mascarenhas, to put Maine up with under ten minutes to play. Boston College found the goal they needed with 1:02 remaining in the fourth to tie things, then got the game-winner 2:30 into the first overtime half.
Borley's eight saves came on 25 Eagle shots, as BC outshot Maine by a 25-9 margin including a 20-4 advantage after halftime. The Eagles also posted nine penalty corners while Maine recorded just three.
Maine looks to build on Saturday's effort in their second contest of the seasno tomorrow, where they'll take on Massachusetts at 1:00 in Amherst.
