CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Infielder Andres Gimenez, the Indians opening day shortstop, is finally back in the big leagues. The Indians, meanwhile, are looking for a starting pitcher for Monday’s game against the Reds.
The Indians recalled Gimenez from Class AAA Columbus on Saturday and optioned struggling right-hander J.C. Mejia to Columbus. Mejia, who allowed eight runs in 2 1/3 innings against Toronto on Wednesday, was scheduled to start Monday.
“We haven’t made that decision yet,” said acting manager DeMarlo Hale when asked about Monday’s starter. “Tomorrow we’ll start getting a final decision on that and who it may be.”
The Indians could go with a bullpen game. Hale was asked if rookie Justin Garza could be an option. Garza has pitched well in middle and long relief roles for the Indians.
“Sometimes you see guys having success and you don’t want to change that,” said Hale. “This kid has been good out of the bullpen, but I’m sure that could be a conversation if it gets to that. But the success he’s had out of the bullpen and stabilizing the game. I think he’s been pretty good at that.”
Mejia (1-7. 8.75) has been a mess for a while. He’s 0-5 with a 12.73 ERA (33 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings) in his last six starts.
“”He just has to command the baseball,” said Hale. “I don’t mean to make it sound that simple. He’s got great movement on his pitches. He can pitch to both sides of the plate.
“We use the term he can X the plate because he can throw his slider to righties on one side of the plate and sink it to the other side. The games where he’s been effective, he’s been on the plate?”
No. 1: Who will play shortstop with the arrival of Andres Gimenez
It sounds as if Amed Rosario will stay at shortstop, while Gimenez will bounce between second and short. Gimenez was playing second and short at Columbus..
“Andres will play both second and short,” said Hale. “He’ll give Rosario a little breathing room to take a day off from playing shortstop. I think Gimenez will play more second, but we do want to see him play short. That way we can give Rosario a day off here and there.”
Hale said Gimenez’s arrival will give him the option of DHing Rosario and playing Franmil Reyes more in right field as soon as he gets over his back issues.
Gimenez hit .287 (60-for-209) with 13 doubles, 10 homers and 31 RBI at Columbus. He slashed .287/.342/.502. He hit .179 (14-for-78) with two homers and five RBI with the Indians before being sent down.
Over his last 12 games with the Clippers, Gimenez was hitting .380 (19-for-50) with seven RBI.
No. 2: Bobby Bradley update
Bobby Bradley, whose two-run double helped the Indians beat the Tigers on Friday, left that game in the fifth inning with an injury to his left knee. Bradley was not in Saturday’s starting lineup.
“He was a little sore when he came in today,” said Hale. “He has a contusion. We’ll monitor him the next day or two. It’s nothing major that I heard or structurally. He’s sore, but with threatment we hope he starts to turn the corner in a day or two.”
Bradley was injured at the plate when he tried to score from second on Harold Ramirez’s single in the third inning.
No. 3: Who’s on first
Owen Miller was scheduled to start at first base Saturday. The Indians were working out a number of players at first Saturday afternoon following Bradley’s injury. Harold Ramirez came in from left field to replace Bradley on Friday.
It’s the first time Ramirez has played first in the big leagues or minors, but he did play first in December while playing winter ball in Colombia.
“I just said I’ve played there before,” said Ramirez. “I wasn’t afraid. I was just going to block everything that came my way.”
No. 4: New backstop
Veteran catcher Wilson Ramos made his Indians debut on Saturday. The Indians promoted Ramos from Columbus on Friday after Roberto Perez was placed on the injured list with right shoulder and back soreness.
“Wilson is a veteran catcher who has been around,” said Hale. “I don’t think there’s a big worry with him. He caught Eli Morgan down in Triple-A. So there’s some familiarity there, which was a factor in him playing today. I expect him to come in and do a good job.”
Morgan started Saturday’s game. The start of the game was delayed by rain for 1 hour and 6 minutes.
No. 5: Finally
Harold Ramirez entered Saturday’s game hitting .375 (21-for-56) with runners in scoring position. It’s the fourth highest average in the big leagues this year among players with at least 60 plate appearances. . .The Indians didn’t have a home run among their 15 hits on Friday. The last time they had a game like that was on June 26, 2017 against Texas when they had 19 hits. . .Jose Ramirez leads the big leagues with 311 extra base hits since the start of the 2017 season. . .Catcher Austin Hedges is hitting .163 (13-for-80) at home and .191 (18-for-94) on the road. . .Franmil Reyes is hitting .321 (35-for-109) at home and .239 (32-for-134) on the road. . .Bradley is hitting .462 (6-for-13) with two homers and four RBI against the Tigers this year.
