Green Bay - The Laona/Wabeno Rebels made their first appearance ever at the state tournament this weekend. After defeating Monticello on Friday, the Rebels faced off against McDonell Central Catholic for the state title.

Laona/Wabeno could not get the job done though, as they would fall in three straight sets, finishing as state runners-up.

Heading into their match-up, they knew that they were the dark horse but they were use to that.

"We were the underdog in our conference, too," Michelle Boor, head coach said. "You rise to the occasion and push on."

"That is, like, our biggest mentality," Elizabeth Krawze, Rebels senior said. "Coming in, we were the underdog. Even in sectionals and regionals, that was our push. Like, 'We're better than that' and we can show them what we have."

And with two towns with a combined population of just over 2,000 people, Rebel fans packed the Resch Center, making it feel like a home game.

"We set out what we wanted to accomplish," Boor said. "We made it to state. We represented the Northwoods. We're taking home a ball. We gave it everything we had and left it all on the floor."

For Krawze, she had a historic run at Laona/Wabeno. She'll finish her career with over 1,500 kills and a state runner-up finish. While she is sad that it's over, she's also thankful for the many great years as a Rebel.

"I really would not be here without all of my teammates from all four years," Krawze said. "But, I just thank everyone for being a part of my journey and being able to make it here is just awesome."
