CONWAY, S.C. – Indiana State rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit but ultimately fell short to New Mexico State, falling 80-66 to the Aggies in the third-place game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational Sunday night at the HTC Center.
Hot shooting in the final 15 minutes of play from Micah Thomas helped will ISU to close the gap to six points with just over three minutes to play, but NMSU was able to get back-to-back baskets to settle the Sycamores and regain control.
Thomas led the Trees with a career high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 14 second half points. Cooper Neese tallied 18 points while Cameron Henry scored 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Sycamores.
Forward Dearon Tucker played in one of the best games in his short ISU career. Tucker was able to match the size of the Aggies while scoring five, grabbing three rebounds and blocking a shot.
New Mexico State (4-1) shot 53 percent (32-60) from the floor and 38 percent (11-29) from deep while Indiana State shot 40 percent (23-57) from the field and 25 percent from distance.
It was all New Mexico State to start as the Aggies scored the first seven points before Kailex Stephens was able to get a tip-in off an offensive rebound to put ISU on the board at the 17:15 mark. Cooper Neese and Micah Thomas ignited the Sycamores during a 10-0 run with back-to-back 3-pointers to pull ISU to 16-13 forcing a NMSU timeout.
Even as the Aggies played a physical game on both ends of the floor, ISU was the team that was in foul trouble as Cameron Henry battled through two first half fouls. The guard was able to put the Sycamores on top for the first time at 17-16 with an off the dribble bank shot as the shot clock expired at the 10:27 mark.
After Neese shot two free throws following a NMSU flagrant foul on a rebound, the Aggies were able to reel off a 10-6 run to take a 33-25 lead.
Neese led the way for the Trees after 20 minutes with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Thomas had nine while Julian Larry added four points. New Mexico State was able to take advantage of offensive rebounds with an 8-2 lead in second chance points to take a 41-31 lead into the locker room.

Donnie Tillman led New Mexico State with 23 points while Will McNair Jr. had 12 points and 15 rebounds.
The Sycamores will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 27, when the team travels to Muncie for a matchup with in-state rival Ball State. Tip is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
