DENVER — Cañon City’s wrestling team wrapped up its final day of the CHSAA State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Ball Arena.
Senior Ezavian “EZ” Ortega was pinned in the state championship match, but the Tigers head coach Jeremy Gilkerson was pleased with his team’s performance.
Senior Nicholas Grizales, who defeated Ortega in the regional finals, pinned him in three minutes and 19 seconds of their 138-pound 4A state championship match. At the end of the first round, Girzales had a 2-0 lead over Ortega, getting a takedown in the closing seconds of the round.
Ortega scored a point early in the second round, narrowing the margin to 2-1. Grizales was then able to record another takedown, making the score 4-1, and then pinned Ortega for the victory.
“I took the program over four years ago,” Gilkerson said. “I needed a group of kids to build and change things up. The reality is that EZ has been a large part of that. If there’s a kid that deserves a state title, EZ’s one of them. The good news for that young man is he will take this as a learning block, and I believe he’ll be a successful person in whatever he chooses to do after high school.”
Along with Ortega, Cañon City will lose a total of 10 seniors this season.
“Kierin Mick has been an outstanding leader for us the last four years,” Gilkerson said. “Felippe Willis showed up this year for us. He’s been a tremendous addition to the team. Hunter Young is a phenomenal senior for us the last couple of years. The list goes on and on. I could go on and on about every senior.”
The Tigers will welcome a young team for the 2022-2023 season.
“We’ve got some young guys that are going to fill some spots,” Gilkerson said. “We call it Tiger Style. We have high integrity; we have high expectations, and we represent our community the way it’s supposed to be. The expectation is we continue to push with the same Tiger Style that we’ve been pushing for the last four years.”
