(Feb. 24, 2022) Matt Fee is calling it a red herring. In official language, it’s being called a “quality of life issue.” It’s an argument that’s come to the forefront in the ongoing debate over short-term vacation rentals, and Fee, a member of the select Board, believes it misses the point.
The warrant article in question is a town-drafted and Finance Committee-endorsed proposal to create a registration system for the island’s 2,000-plus shortterm rentals through the Board of Health.
The intent is to control the noise, traffic, parking and nuisance issues called into question with rental properties. “It’s been portrayed as it’s about noise and we can take care of noise,” Fee said.
“Noise is an issue, but it’s missing the bigger issue: the commercialization of our island. Where do year-round people and workers live as the remaining neighborhoods are gentrified? Do we want an island where the majority of dwellings are private estates and mini hotels and the workers commute on the boat? We can’t subsidize employee housing fast enough to make up for the loss of thousands of homes.”
