Facebook Bug Spams Feeds With Fan Comments on Celeb Pages - PCMag

UPDATE: A Meta spokesperson confirmed to PCMag that the glitch has been fixed. "Earlier today, a configuration change caused some people to have trouble with their Facebook Feed," the company said in a statement. "We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience."

Original Story:
A bizarre Facebook glitch flooded users' feeds with "random" people's comments on celebrity pages they follow.

As The Verge reports(Opens in a new window), folks took to Twitter to share screenshots of fan posts (usually filtered out by an algorithm) from strangers to celebs like Eminem, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, The Weekend, Vin Diesel, Rihanna, and more.

"We're aware that some people are having trouble with their Facebook Feed," a Meta spokesperson told PCMag in an emailed statement. "We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience."

While many have expressed frustration over the unintentional social media takeover, which makes it difficult to keep up with family and friends, others quickly jumped on the bandwagon, sending memes to big-name pages in hopes of being shared more widely. Others are taking advantage of the situation by spamming PayPal donation links or promoting cryptocurrency projects.

One popular image of a plated sandwich asks that anyone who sees the meme shares it to another celebrity's Facebook page. "Keep the turkey sandwich moving," urged the photo, which has already been posted to unofficial accounts for The Beatles and Muse.

The global glitch—reaching as far as Europe and Australia, according to Sky News(Opens in a new window)—began this morning around 1:20 a.m. ET, peaked at about 3 a.m., and may still be affecting some users, based on data from Downdetector(Opens in a new window) and Is The Service Down?(Opens in a new window) By the time you read this, there's just as good of a chance Facebook managed to resolve the bug, though.
