Tigers’ Zack Short about to get some ABs for first time in 2022 - MLive.com

DETROIT -- Zack Short was having a really good month in Toledo. Now he’ll get a chance to transfer some of that production to Detroit.

Short was in the starting lineup at second base for the Tigers’ series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

Short was recalled to take the spot of Jonathan Schoop, who was placed on the injured list with a sprained right ankle.

Short is hitting .289 with four doubles, two home runs and an OPS of .937 in 68 plate appearances in August. Most impressively he has more walks (16) than strikeouts (15).

“I’m going to try to mix him in,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “His opportunities have been minimal and he’s going to try to take advantage of it now.”

Short can play second, third and ... short. He has also played more regularly in the outfield at Toledo.

The Tigers made the decision to put Schoop on the IL on Monday because his ankle had swelled so dramatically. But after a lot of ice baths, Schoop said the swelling was nearly gone and he no longer needed his scooter for mobility.

Schoop said he’s hopeful that he only spends the minimum 10 days on the IL; Hinch said he was done making optimistic predictions about injuries, but he expected Schoop to return before the end of the season, which has 39 games remaining.

More updates

Hinch said it’s no longer “probable” that Tigers catcher Jake Rogers (Tommy John surgery) return in 2022. The Tigers had originally thought he might play in a few games at the end of the year.

“He hasn’t progressed to where we feel comfortable that he’s ready to be fully active,” Hinch said.

Rogers is currently rehabbing in Lakeland, Fla., and would need to be sent out on a rehab assignment before returning to Detroit.

Tigers outfielder Austin Meadows (heel soreness) is doing his rehab work in the early afternoon at Comerica Park rather than before the game. Hinch said Meadows will not accompany the team to Texas this weekend and instead continue to work in Detroit.
