Avon, Ohio

The Avon Veterans Memorial (located behind the post office, 36225 Detroit Road) will serve as the perfect backdrop to host the special photographic war memorial, Remembering Our Fallen. The memorial honors our country’s military fallen from the Global War on Terror (Sept. 11, 2001 - Aug. 30, 2021) through military and personal photos. The display is free and open to the public to view from Sept. 1-5.

Remembering our Fallen

The special photographic war memorial, Remembering Our Fallen, comes to Avon Sept. 1-5. The memorial honors our country’s military fallen from the Global War on Terror (Sept. 11, 2001 - Aug. 30, 2021) through military and personal photos. (photo courtesy of Patriotic Productions).

“There are two identical National Memorials that travel our Nation; each has 5,391 fallen from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Bill Williams, co-founder of Patriotic Productions in an email. “Also included are military men and women who died in stateside or overseas base training accidents (red banners), as well as those who served in combat zones but lost their battles to PTS (post-traumatic stress) after returning home (blue banners).

Patriotic Productions is a non-profit founded by Bill and his wife, Evonne. They are not veterans, nor do they come from military families. The couple’s four sons have all volunteered to serve our country; two soldiers and two Marines.

According to information posted on the organization’s website, the Williamses were inspired to create Remembering Our Fallen in the fall of 2010. Their eternal hope is ‘to honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, to provide comfort to friends and family of the fallen, and to remind others of the tremendous cost paid by some. Its legacy will be that these men and women will never be forgotten, and that their names will be remembered.’ The inspiration for this project came after reading a story in the Omaha World-Herald newspaper about a father whose pain and grief were even greater four years after his son, Joshua Ford, had died in Iraq.

In November 2010, with the backing of the newspaper, and financial support from sponsors, including Bellevue University, Bill and Evonne created the traveling photo memorial. The memorial included photos of the fallen from Nebraska who had died in the War on Terror since Sept. 11, 2001. Over the next few years they decided to create memorials for other states.

“The goal of Remembering Our Fallen is like that of other war memorials - to remind Americans of the tremendous cost of our freedom and to remember those who sacrificed all,” said Bill. “A Gold Star family’s greatest fear is that their loved one will be forgotten. Speak Their Names.”

After completing 19 state memorials, the focus shifted to a National Memorial that encompasses the fallen from across the country. This National Memorial was unveiled in September 2017 at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and continues to tour the nation, giving Americans across the country the opportunity to honor our Fallen. In 2020, a second identical memorial was completed.

Sheri Seroka, Avon’s business development consultant, happened to see the memorial while visiting family in Illinois a couple of years ago.

“I don’t personally know any service members who have lost their lives, however, I found myself lost in their stories and so humbled by their sacrifice,” she said. “I spent several hours walking through the installation and still didn’t get through it all. Mayor (Bryan) Jensen is always looking for events to bring to Avon that are relevant, timely and meaningful. This event checks all of those boxes. And with the location of the Avon Veterans Memorial, we have the perfect set-up.”

The memorial is self-guided, however, Seroka noted there are plans to have volunteers available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day (Sept. 1-5) to answer questions or guide visitors to a specific service person’s specific location. A few events are also scheduled for opening day, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. including:

--Presentation of Colors - Army National Guard

--National Anthem - Jeff Stanczyk (retired Cleveland Police Department and Avon School Resource Officer)

--Invocation - Pastor Jeffrey Phail (police and fire chaplain)

--Riderless Horse - Cleveland Police Department Mounted Unit

--Rifle Salute - Army National Guard

--Taps - Kerry Barvincak (Avon VFW Post 7035)

--Amazing Grace - Cleveland Police Department Pipe and Drum members Keith Haag and Pat Sullivan
