AVON LAKE, Ohio -- The City of Avon Lake is in the process of rolling out an updated website offering more user-friendly features and easier navigation.
During a recent Collective Meeting of City Council, Barb Cagley, director of the city’s Digital Media Department, gave council members a virtual tour of the website and its features.
“When we started the website, I had a couple goals in mind,” Cagley said. “We wanted to improve the navigation and wanted everything to be visible from the homepage. Navigation really allows you to see about 95 percent of the website right from the homepage to really help residents find the information they are looking for before they have to start clicking through.”
Cagley also explained that the new website will focus on services.
“The way the old website was designed, it was broken down by government, but really you didn’t know who did what, so you had to do some hunting for information on recycling or trash collection," she said.
"So we created a section that’s just the services, so they’re right there at people’s forefront.”
Additional features on the website include videos displayed throughout the pages, as well as an enhanced calendar.
“The calendar is the highlight of the site,” said Cagley. “We have a lot going on in the city and we want to make it present so people can see what’s going on and maybe increase participation or involvement in the city.”
The new site also encompasses the city’s brand image, which Cagley has worked hard to develop.
“The look and feel that we’ve given to the design is the same that we are using for the pole banners, the new citizen engagement app, various printed materials that we are doing, and our social media site, so have continuity in all marketing materials," she said.
Residents will also find an interactive ward map, as well as a detailed map with city parks and bike trails. Each park will be listed with the features it offers.
Ward 1 Councilwoman Billie Jo David, a member of the city’s Digital Media Commission, was able to preview the website in advance during a meeting of the commission last month and noted that the new website is “a lot more user friendly.”
“One highlight of the new website that I think is really good for our citizens is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility of it,” David said. “We have an accessibility menu on the main page of the website, and what that will do is you can have the page read to you, you can change the font size to make it larger, and you can change the brightness. So for people with low vision or hearing impairments, this really comes in mind with some new ADA requirements on websites.
“How we are going to be able to use this in the future is really link it to our social media strategy and have the answers and the videos that people want to hear on our hub, which is our website,” she continued.
“And then when we post on social media, we’ll be able to bring them back to our hub and, in doing so, they might click on three other features or find an event they want to do.”
As for when the new website will be posted, Cagley noted that after a few more tweaks and council’s feedback, they are ready to go live soon. To access the city’s website, go to avonlake.org.
AVON
Craft program: The Avon Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Grab n’ Go Craft Program for children ages 4 and up (Avon residents). The parks are staffed with an attendant who will distribute pre-packaged crafts to children on a first-come, first-served basis during designated times.
To encourage social distancing, the Grab n’ Go Craft Program will not allow crafts to be done onsite with the attendant. Participants must take their craft package home or to another location. Each package is designed to be done with the supervision of the participant’s parent/guardian.
Crafts are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 16 to July 2. Pickup times are from 10 a.m. to noon at Schwartz Road Park Pavilion A (near basketball court), 35001 Schwartz Road. The second location is Lowe’s Pavilion (near the Every Child’s Playground and Avon Aquatic Facility), 36265 Detroit Road. Each park offers the same craft.
Cheerleading registration: The Avon Youth Cheerleaders program is on for right now. Participants will cheer for the Avon Youth Football Padded Flag League (grades 3-4) and the Youth Tackle League (grades 5-6).
Registration is now open through June 26 (or until spots fill up) on the Parks and Recreation tab on the city’s website, cityofavon.com.
Electronics repair: CPR Cell Phone Repair is now open in the new plaza across from Martin’s Deli (34970 Detroit Road), offering free repair price estimates for fixing devices. Tech experts will diagnose the problem and provide an affordable estimate.
Repairs can be made on a wide range of electronic gadgets, including cell phones, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs/PCs, tablets, cameras, MP3 players, gaming consoles and drones. They can also service water-damaged devices or cracked screens.

NORTH RIDGEVILLE
Fireworks postponed: Due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing requirements, city officials have decided to postpone the Star Spangled Celebration and Fireworks originally scheduled for July 3. The fireworks portion of the event may be held later this year. When a new date is selected, information will be posted on the city’s website.
City Hall opens: City Hall and municipal buildings will reopen Monday (June 15). The Senior Center will remain closed until further notice. Visitors must wear masks when entering the buildings and maintain social distancing. If you are sick, city officials ask that you stay home.
Coffee chat: Mayor Kevin Corcoran continues his monthly coffee and conversation meetings with residents virtually via Zoom. The next event is scheduled for 8 to 9 a.m. June 19.
Residents can join the conversation from their computer by logging in at us02web.zoom.us/j/89324052078. The meeting ID is 893 2405 2078. Or you can phone in and use the ID listed, call 301-715-8592 or go to us02web.zoom.us/u/kBkaMLV9l to find a local number to call in for the chat.
Construction update: All of the railroad crossings in the city that were closed for construction work are now open. But Sugar Ridge Road will be closed, from Maddock Road to Avon Belden Road (Ohio 83), for the next two weeks to complete the sewer, water and Westfield Sewer Plant Decommissioning project.
Aerial patrols: Area residents may notice a low-flying helicopter in the air this week. Ohio Edison is conducting its annual Herbicide Vegetation Management patrols (weather permitting). The Helo Air helicopter (white with blue and gray striping, tail number 828HA) will be inspecting Ohio Edison transmission lines and flying at a speed of approximately 35 to 40 mph above or alongside the lines, and may circle around for closer inspections.
