Spike Lee has released a harrowing new short film about the death of George Floyd amid the ongoing protests against police brutality in America. The short, which the Oscar-winning writer-director released on social media, highlights the death of Floyd, comparing it to the similar deaths of Eric Garner and the fictional character Radio Raheem in Lee’s seminal 1989 drama Do the Right Thing.
“3 Brothers-Radio Raheem, Eric Garner And George Floyd,” Lee wrote on Twitter.
Trigger warning: The short goes back and forth between the deaths of all three men, showing the viral, harrowing footage of Garner and Floyd as they are being suffocated to death by the police. It’s a simple but brutal watch, clocking in at just under two minutes and opening with a simple message on a black screen: “Will history stop repeating itself?”
Lee has been vocal about the protests, sharing photos of Floyd alongside images of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman who was shot eight times by police in the middle of the night in her Louisville home, and Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man who was shot dead after being pursued and attacked by two white men in Atlanta.
“May Our Queen And Kings Rest In Paradise While Agent Orange Tweets ‘When The Looting Starts,The Shooting Starts,’” Lee wrote in another tweet, referring to Donald Trump’s recent tweet directly threatening protesters and characterizing them as “thugs.”
Lee has also shared photos of graffiti and protest signs left behind by protesters in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. One image was of red graffiti that read “BLM” for Black Lives Matter, on a sign for the Barclays Center, where the first major Floyd protest in Brooklyn began.
“Da Struggle Continues,” Lee wrote in his caption.
