Submissions are now open for the 2021 Arkansas Shorts: A Night of Short Film festival, which will return next year to the Malco Theatre.
“This will be the 14th anniversary of Arkansas Shorts,” said Sonny Kay, executive director of Low Key Arts, which produces the festival, set for Jan. 2.
Kay said that since its inception, the festival “continues to grow a little bit every year.” He also said that the festival will receive “hundreds of submissions” from filmmakers from all around the world.
The festival is broken up into three blocks of films. Kay said that the first is the international block. He said they will get films from many places ranging from Southeast Asia to Israel. He also said that they “tend to get a lot of submissions from France.”
Next is the North American block. Kay said that they will receive a lot of submissions for this block, as well.
The final grouping is the Arkansas block, short films that are made in Arkansas. Kay said that there will be some shorts shown in this block from Arkansas filmmakers, but this is also the block where the student films that are created as part of Low Key Arts’ Inception to Projection program will be shown.
“All films made (in the class) will be screened in January,” Kay said.
Kay said that this is a big draw for the Inception to Projection program. “Thrill of that was a big draw, and it still is,” Kay said, adding that the educational value of the program is also becoming just as big a reason that people enter.
The films that come out of the program, and will be screened at the festival, have gotten Kay’s approval. “I’m forever surprised by the creativity and the content that’s produced. Kay said that he was a student in the program two years ago. He said he did the program “to know what I’m talking about” when discussing the program.
Kay described the program as “really hands-on” and that it “can be a little bit grueling.”
As for the movies that will be shown in the festival, Kay said that there will be a healthy mix, from comedies to documentaries, experimental movies, animation and music videos.
“Little something for everyone,” Kay said.
While hundreds of movies will be submitted, Kay said that only a small amount will make it in. “Last year around 30 films” were shown, Kay said.
Narrowing that large amount of movies down to around 30, Kay said, does mean that many good movies will end up being left out. He said that Jennifer Gerber, artistic director for the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, and Chris Wilks, also of the HSDFF, are the ones curating the lineup. Gerber is also teaching the Inception to Projection class.
There are three deadlines for submissions, with incremental cost increases as time goes on. For the early bird deadline, on Aug. 1, the cost of a submission is $10. The regular deadline, on Sept. 18, costs $20. The late deadline is on Nov. 2, and costs $30.
