Disney is a massive machine that keeps on getting bigger. With their recent Star Wars and Marvel involvement, they're an even bigger juggernaut at the moment. However, despite all the fame and fortune that takes place over at Disney, they have very strict policies when it comes to the talent they hire and those working behind the scenes. We've seen a few instances of Disney firing an actor or actress because of their behavior off-camera.
Generally speaking, that usually signals the end of their run together for good. On the flip side, there are rare actors that have no interest in working for Disney again, Shia LaBeouf is an example of that. He called his pay lackluster during his 'Even Stevens' days and he doesn't see himself returning to the studio at any point.
Although Disney recently added a new member to the forbidden list, it should be known that it isn't the first time this takes place. Let's take a ride down memory lane.
A History Of Banning Talent
Jake Paul, Roseanne, PewDiePie, and Ronni Hawk are just a couple of celebs to be shown the door for good from Disney. For the most part, their behavior off-cameras cost them their jobs. There have been some exceptions in the past. Take James Gunn for example, he was fired for some nasty tweets coming from his past, only to be rehired years later.
Gunn shared a lengthy apology statement, which might've been mandatory, "My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative," he said in his July 2018 apology. "I have regretted them for many years since—not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today."
"Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all."
Gunn was given a second chance but a lot of others weren't. We can assume the most recent addition to the list won't be as lucky.
Gina Carano Is Now On The List
Once again, speaking out might not be the best thing, especially if your view is a controversial one. Gina has made some touchy statements in the past, though one relating the US to Nazi Germany crossed the line with a lot of people, including Disney, "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views."
Making comments on racism and trans-lives also didn't help her cause. She was removed by Disney, though Carano stated with Deadline, the writing was already on the wall prior, "You know how boxers head-hunt sometimes and forget to go for the body? I feel like Disney or Lucasfilm or whoever it is, just certain people at that company…I feel like I’ve been being head-hunted (…) and you can feel it. I was prepared at any point to be let go, because I’ve seen this happen to so many people. I’ve seen the looks on their faces. I’ve seen the bullying that takes place, and so when this started, they point their guns at you, and you know it’s only a matter of time. I’ve seen it happen to so many people, and I just thought to myself (…) ‘you’re coming for me, I know you are."
Ultimately, Gina got a bit of good news, signing a deal with The Daily Wire, "The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them."
Without a doubt, Disney closed the door for good while others haven't just yet.
