MARSHALL — The Marshall amateur baseball team has been involved in a lot of close games, especially during the Region 4C tournament where their last two games were decided by one run. Facing Regal with their season on the line, Marshall found their backs against the wall, trailing by five runs after committing five errors, but a late comeback attempt by the A’s fell just short in a 5-4 loss on Saturday at Legion Field.

Marshall manager Ryan Schwagel said he was proud of the way his team competed but added the errors and mistakes hurt them early on.

“We struggled for two innings and moved the ball around and made some errors and some mistakes and couldn’t recover all of the way,” Schwagel said. “We had 15 hits, we hit enough, just needed one more to get us back in the game. The guys couldn’t have battled any better than what we did.”

It was a back-and-forth battle to start, with neither team finding scoring in the first two and a half innings. Regal would then strike first in the bottom of the third, reaching on a dropped third strike and an error before a three-run home run gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. The Eagles weren’t done there, capitalizing on two Marshall errors to load the bases with no outs before a sacrifice fly and an RBI single pushed their advantage to 5-0 after four.

Marshall had an answer, though, as Alex Thompson got hit by a pitch before advancing to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. A couple of batters later, Matt Hmielewski connected on an RBI single to put Marshall on the board.

The A’s kept battling, with Zach Olson drawing a leadoff walk to start the sixth and Ryan VanMoer connecting on a single before Charlie Jacobson smacked an RBI single. Peyton Grant then added an RBI single of his own to trim the deficit to two at 5-3. An inning later, Marshall drew to within one after Hmielewski led off with a triple and Mason Penske connected on an RBI ground-rule double.

But that was the closest Marshall got. The A’s were able to get a pair of baserunners aboard in both the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t bring in the tying run en route to the 5-4 loss.

Hmielewski led Marshall with four hits and an RBI while Penske added three hits and an RBI, Jacobson had two hits and an RBI, VanMoer had two hits, Grant had a hit and an RBI and Schwagel, Logan Tomasek and Thompson each had a hit.

Penske took the loss on the mound, going nine innings while allowing five runs on three hits and struck out 10.

With the loss, Marshall’s season comes to an end with a record of 17-17. Schwagel said their biggest takeaway is they need to continue to play as a group and keep fighting until the end.

“We just need to keep coming together and keep battling like we did here in the tournament. We can’t do any more than what we just did all three games and we fought all the way until the end in all three of them,” Schwagel said. “It’s disappointing we ended like that, but there’s always hope for the future.”
