A 26-year-old woman shot and killed in McKeesport has been identified as Karli Short, the 26-year-old daughter of former Penn State and NFL linebacker Brandon Short, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Police were called to the scene around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, the report said, and found Short with a gunshot wound to her head.
“My heart is broken,” Brandon Short wrote on Facebook. “I’ve lost the light of my life, my oldest daughter Karli passed away this morning in a senseless act of gun violence. The love she had was so pure and true. The world lost a beautiful soul.”
Brandon Short was an All-American and two-time captain for Penn State under Joe Paterno from 1997-’99. He was a fourth-round pick of the New York Giants in the 2000 NFL Draft and went on to play seven seasons in the league.
Short was elected to Penn State’s Board of Trustees on July 1, 2018, while he continued to serve as Executive Director and Portfolio Manager at PGIM Real Estate. Among other things, Short has been a vocal backer of coach James Franklin going back to when Franklin was was hired in 2014.
In February, Short urged his fellow trustees to invest “much more” in the football program, according to Mark Wogenrich of All Penn State.
Franklin opened his Tuesday news conference with reporters with a message for Brandon Short and his family:
