The Brandon Short family didn’t just lose a daughter when 26-year-old Karli Short was fatally shot last week and found dead on the streets of her football father’s hometown of McKeesport. The family also lost the grand baby she was carrying.

As Karli Short’s family members and McKeesport community leaders gathered Thursday to announce a $20,000 reward for information that leads to Karli’s killer’s arrest, Brandon Short confirmed that his daughter was pregnant, doubling the heartbreak of the violent crime.

Brandon Short, a renowned Pittsburgh-born Penn State and NFL linebacker, said the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office informed him Karli was pregnant with a boy at the time of her death.

This, as the family and community leaders gathered at a local park to announce the monetary reward for the person whose anonymous tips lead to the arrest of the killer. The monetary reward is for anyone who gives a “100% anonymous tip” at 1-833-ALL-TIPS, according to a press release.

The $20,000 reward comes from a $10,000 family donation that was graciously matched by a local business owner, Richard Bazzy who is from the Mon Valley. An additional $1,000 was donated by PurePenn, that will go towards flyers and a billboard, the release stated.

“We will not stop until we catch the person who did this to my daughter,” Brandon Short vowed in a statement. “I want the criminals and anyone who is keeping their secrets to know that our quest for justice will not go away until we track down her killer. By giving the police information that leads to an arrest, we promise you that you will stay anonymous,” he added, describing the very private terms of the tip procedures and reward.

The Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit continues to investigate Karli Short’s killing.

Brandon Short was an All-American and two-time captain for Penn State under Joe Paterno from 1997-’99. He was a fourth-round pick of the New York Giants in the 2000 NFL Draft and went on to play seven seasons in the league.

Short was elected to Penn State’s Board of Trustees on July 1, 2018, while he continued to serve as Executive Director and Portfolio Manager at PGIM Real Estate. Among other things, Short has been a vocal backer of coach James Franklin going back to when Franklin was hired in 2014.
