Drew Carlton is being rewarded for his consistent performance in the minor leagues with his first call to the big-league club.
The Tigers selected the contract of the right-handed reliever from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. He takes the spot of infielder Zack Short, who was optioned after Friday’s game.
Carlton, who turns 26 in four days, has struck out 48 and walked 10 in 49 innings of work at Toledo this season.
That’s pretty much been his resume at every stop in his minor league career: Few walks, fewer homers, plenty of strikes (and a fair amount of strikeouts).
He was drafted in the 32nd round of Florida State in 2017, never attracting much draft or prospect buzz due to his lack of eye-popping velocity.
“Sometimes we get caught up in prospect status, and who’s ahead of who,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “Sometimes you’ve just got to go with the guy that keeps getting outs. Drew has been overlooked and a lot of guys passed him by. Now it’s his opportunity to come up. As I told him in my office, ‘This can last a day or it can last a decade. Just come and pitch and do well.’”
Short, 26, has been unable to fully overcome a long-running offensive slump and the return of Niko Goodrum earlier this week made his position tenuous.
The Tigers could still opt to bring back another bench player in the days to come if they feel their pitching needs are covered. Short, infielder Isaac Paredes and outfielder Daz Cameron could all be candidates.
