Rhinelander - Canoes, kayaks, auto parts, toys, workers...and now, ammunition.
An ammunition shortage, right before hunting season, is leaving hunters scrambling. But this is nothing new for Chris Turk, manager of Hodag Gun & Loan.
"It's nationwide," said Turk. "It's pretty much every sporting store in the nation."
He believes it's a consumer-induced shortage.
"Just like when the toilet paper shortage hit after the COVID scare started, same thing," said Turk. "Just the hint of it gets everybody buying in a frenzy."
Turk is seeing people come in the store and call, wondering if the ammo they need is there. The store is limiting the number of boxes people can buy because they're so hard to come by. Just like Turk said, it's nearly every sporting goods store that's dealing with the shortage.
The owner at Mel's Trading Post in Rhinelander says they have orders for ammunition going back a year, and they still haven't gotten them yet. And it doesn't help that the number of new gun owners was at an all-time high as of 2020.
Nearly 23 million guns were purchased in 2020--almost 14 percent more than in 2019.
"An increase in sales of new guns the past 18 months has been unprecedented," said Mel's owner Mitch Mode.
Mode is doing everything he can to get customers some ammo.
"It's going from a concern to a, quite frankly, a crisis because every day we have people looking for popular ammo, .30-06, 30-30," said Mode. "It's just not shipping through."
Manufacturers are producing what they can, but it's still not enough. With ammo shipments trickling in, and deliveries unpredictable, Mode still encourages people to call the store and see if they get lucky.
