YPSILANTI, MI – Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan in Ypsilanti is hosting its first free virtual film festival this weekend.
The virtual Lunafest event is a traveling festival of films created by women, about women -- for everyone, organizers said.
“Initially, Lunafest was going to be a program that we charged for and you would get popcorn and pop because it was at the theater,” said Rhonda Fields, executive director of Girls on the Run Southeastern Michigan.
“Once COVID-19 happened and we decided to move it virtually, we knew that this was not the time to charge for this fundraiser. However, if you want to donate, you’re more than welcome to.”
A trailer offers a peak at the seven short films that make up the duration of the 96-minute feature. The festival was created by Luna Bar, the California-based maker of nutritional bars and drinks.
Registration is open on the website to receive a link to the films on May 9. Once the link is live, participants can watch the film on their own time through May 10. The recommended age is 14 and up, however, the films are not rated.
Fields said this is an important time for Girls on the Run Southeastern Michigan to stay connected to the community, have others learn about the organization and have conversations about what it’s like to be a woman.
Due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, typical programming has been canceled. Normally, the organization hosts a 10-week after-school program that provides mentoring to girls from third to eighth grade.
“Amazing volunteer coaches go in and teach the girls about healthy eating, body habits, how girls are portrayed in the media – really building them up,” said Fields.
At the end of the program, Girls on the Run participants gather for a 5k event, in celebration of completing the program. Every girl receives a winning medal for finishing the program.
The group’s Ypsilanti office, 3075 Clark Road, has been open since 2001, covering Washtenaw, Lenawee, Monroe and Livingston counties. They serve over 1,700 girls a year. Ann Arbor-area schools such as Fortis Academy, Burns Park Elementary and Childs Elementary normally have volunteer coaches every week.
