Billie Eilish Gets Real About Body Image in This Transfixing Short Film - Vogue.com

Billie Eilish is back, ready to—once again—set the record straight on body image, shaming, and confidence. The pop star took to social media today to share a short film titled NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY, clips of which were featured throughout her Where Do We Go? World Tour.

The portion of the film that was initially shared featured Eilish removing a black tank top to reveal a black bikini, all while her own synthy narration questioned the perception of—and the very right to perceive—her body. At just under four minutes, the full video begins with Eilish in a trademark black zip-up, hood pulled over her two-toned lengths, before her equally recognizable exaggerated nails begin to shed layers.

"Some people hate what I wear. Some people praise it. Some people use it to shame others. Some people use it to shame me. But I feel you watching, always, and nothing I do goes unseen," says Eilish, slowly, over a hypnotic backbeat. "So, whether I feel your stares, your disapproval, or your sigh of relief—if I lived by them, I’d never be able to move. Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach, my hips?” As viewers catch up to the original clip, the message becomes infinitely clear: Though Eilish has struggled with body image issues in the past, those are her own. The opinions of others should be taken elsewhere.
