AVON LAKE, Ohio -- The coronavirus crisis may have been the reason behind the cancellation of the annual Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club (ALGC) plant sale, but that isn’t stopping members from attempting to raise funds for the club to help pay for continued maintenance of civic gardens and other projects in the city.
The club is now selling handmade face masks available in adult male, adult female, youth or toddler sizes for $5 each. Make check payable to ALGC. Cash also accepted. To order, call or 440-258-9276. Pickup location is 33155 Lake Road, Avon Lake.
A second fundraiser is the sale of beautiful blank note cards (with envelopes) featuring prints of original watercolor paintings by club member artists. A pack of six sells for $12. Make check payable to ALGC. Cash also accepted. To order, call 440-930-5789. Pickup locations are 33155 Lake Road, and 78 Coveland Drive, Avon Lake.
A walk-in fundraiser with Dean’s Greenhouse, 3984 Porter Road, Westlake, also supports the Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club. The club will receive 20 percent for all sales at Dean’s throughout the month if patrons mention ALGC’s name.
The objectives of the ALGC are to promote the interests and knowledge of members and the community in home gardening and floral design, and to encourage and participate in civic planting and conservation.

Perfect ACT: Congratulations to Avon High School junior Cole Emerine, 17, for achieving the highest possible ACT Composite score of 36. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning the top score varies from year to year, on average, less than 2 percent of all test takers earn the top score. Cole also took the test last year and scored a 35.
Cafe Piccolo closes; another restaurant coming: Sad to hear that Cafe Piccolo, 35568 Detroit Road, has permanently closed its doors. Cafe Piccolo offered amazing Italian food and, on a personal note, was a wonderful space to host a party. Last year, we had my son’s First Holy Communion luncheon in the party room.
Now more than ever, it is important to spread the wealth and dine at all our local restaurants. I know we often have our “favorites,” but there are lots of great places to check out in the area.
The building won’t sit empty for long, though. A new restaurant is planning to open in a few weeks. Flair 22 is an upscale restaurant/bar. Like Cafe Piccolo, Flair 22 will have Italian cuisine, but with its own “Flair.” According to owner Lia Genovese, the restaurant will also serve more of an “American-style lunch” with lighter entrees.
“I am very excited to bring a dining experience to Avon that is like no other,” said Genovese. “Avon has many wonderful restaurants, so Flair 22 will have a much different atmosphere.”
Follow Flair 22 on Facebook for more information.
