EUGENE, Ore. – Franck Kepnang and Rivaldo Soares scored 28 points off the bench for Oregon, but Arizona State made a pair of clutch three-point shots to escape Matthew Knight Arena with a 69-67 victory.
Kepnang and Soares both contributed career-highs in scoring in the absence of Oregon's leading scorer, Eric Williams Jr. who missed the game with a lower leg injury. Both players also grabbed four rebounds.
"[Franck] did give us some good minutes offensively. I thought he gave us a lot more energy," said head coach Dana Altman. "[Rivaldo] got out in transition and gave us some buckets we really needed."
How it Happened: The game got off to an inauspicious start for the Ducks as Arizona State jumped out to early leads of 8-4 at the game's first minute media timeouts as the Ducks struggled to find the bottom of the net early in the contest.
Oregon made their move after the under-12 minutes media timeout, going on a 10-0 run while holding ASU scoreless for 4:05. De'Vion Harmon forced a Sun Devil timeout and gave Oregon a 22-21 lead when he closed the run with a three-pointer from the wing.
The two teams traded buckets for most of the second half with neither team managing a run larger than six points. Kepnang made a pair of late free throws to put the Ducks up 60-57 with 30 seconds remaining. The Ducks battled and forced a missed shot, but an offensive rebound and kick-out left DJ Horne with an open look that he knocked down to force overtime.
Oregon got off to a slow start in overtime, but forced turnovers and made some key shots to take a one-point lead with a minute left. The Sun Devils were again able to find the open man, this time it was Jay Heath who connected on the go-ahead bucket. The Ducks had a chance at the last possession, but came up just short.
Up Next: Oregon travels to Palo Alto for a Sunday matchup with Stanford on December 12.
