 NORFOLK, Va. – The Purple Eagles erased an eight-goal deficit to force overtime Friday against Old Dominion; however, the Monarchs came out on top 18-17 in non-conference women's lacrosse action in Norfolk, Va.

Lois Garlow and Lexi Braniecki headed the Niagara comeback effort scoring four goals apiece, followed by Rachel Crane with three and Lucy Rugaber with two. Four other Purple Eagles found the back of the net to help Niagara force OT. Starting goalie Michelle Messenger made 11 stops between the pipes.  

Game Recap
First Quarter
• The Purple Eagles were in an early two-goal hole before Lois Garlow found the back of the net on a free-position goal to make it a 2-1 game.
• The Monarchs added two goals before Garlow scored a woman-down goal with 2:57 remaining in the opening frame to cut the Old Dominion lead in half, 4-2.
• Niagara outshot the Monarchs, 10-8 in the first, but Old Dominion would take a three-goal lead into the second.

Second Quarter
• Niagara scored back-to-back goals in 52 seconds to trim the Monarch lead to two, 6-4. Both goals were scored by Lexi Braniecki, with the first being assisted by Jess Foley.
• Old Dominion would score four-unanswered in the final nine minutes of the first half, taking a 10-4 lead into the break.
• Senior Maren Geiger entered the game in relief of Michelle Messenger, who got the start between the pipes for Niagara with 1:33 left in the half.

Third Quarter
• After the Monarchs added another goal at the start of the third to make the score 11-4, Niagara's Andra Savage scored the Purple Eagles' fifth goal at the 10:14 mark.
• Old Dominion would add two more to go up 13-5.
• Messenger reentered the game for NU at the 7:48 mark of the third.
• The Purple and White responded with two goals in nine seconds. The first was scored by Garlow, her third of the game. The second came from Allison McCormick. Both goals came with Niagara, a woman-down.
• Niagara added two more goals to make it four straight goals and a 13-9 as Eliza Wild and Rachel Crane joined the comeback effort.
• Garlow scored the fifth-straight goal for Niagara, and her fourth of the contest, cutting the lead to three, 13-10, with 4:10 remaining in the third.  
• With 1:51 left in the third, Niagara pulled within two with a woman down goal from Lucy Rugaber.

Fourth Quarter
• The Niagara offense kept it going with its seventh and eighth consecutive goals, tying the game at 13-13. Jenna Brill put Niagara down one, and Braniecki tied the game at 13 with her third goal of the contest.
• The Monarchs got back into the scoring column with back-to-back goals to retake the lead 15-13 with 11:41 to go in the contest.
• Braniecki scored her fourth goal to put Niagara back down one, but the Monarchs scored a minute and a half later to go back up by two.
• Niagara was down two with five minutes to go when Crane and Rugaber found the back of the net to force overtime in Norfolk, Va.

Overtime
• Old Dominion would score the game-winner in the second half of the six-minute overtime to take the contest, 18-17.

Niagara Notes
• The Purple and White 17 goals were the most for the Purple Eagles since April 13, 2019, at Iona when they scored 18 times.
• Four Purple Eagles scored three or more goals, the second time this season that NU had three or more players register three or more goals in a game.
• Garlow has 19 goals on the season and has three games with three or more tallies.
• Messenger made 11 saves, her second game this season with 10 or more stops.
• Garlow, Savage, and Foley were the three Purple Eagles to record assists.
• Crane and Wild led NU with two groundballs, Braniecki had a team-best nine draw controls, and Crane finished with four caused turnovers.
• The Purple and White finished with 34 shots on goal, 12 ground balls, 21 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers.

Up Next
• Niagara will conclude its three-game road swing with a trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on the Pitt Panthers on Monday, March 21. The opening draw between the Purple Eagles and Panthers is set for 5 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
