MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Wichita State played from in front for more than 30 minutes Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum but couldn't make enough baskets down the stretch in a 55-50 loss to Kansas State.

Craig Porter Jr. scored 11 points for the Shockers (4-4) who led 45-39 near the midway mark of the second half but managed just five more points on 1-for-11 shooting the rest of the way.

Jaykwon Walton grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with nine points.

Keyontae Johnson (17 points) and Nae'Qwan Tomline (14) led the scoring for K-State, which improved to 7-1 under new head coach Jerome Tang. Markquis Nowell (seven assists) played hero down the stretch, supplying the final six points of the game.

A year ago at INTRUST Bank Arena, it was Nowell's deep three that broke a 54-all tie with 1:36 to go in K-State's 65-59 win over the Shockers. Saturday, he delivered again – this time with 54 seconds left and the score knotted at 50.

The host WIldcats shot just 35.8% for the game but won the turnover battle 16-8.

In its first visit to Bramlage in 19 years, WSU shot 54.5% in the first half to take a 32-29 lead into the break but finished at just 38% overall.

Playing without Jaron Pierre Jr. and Kenny Pohto, the short-handed Shockers ran out of steam. They made just 7-of-27 second-half shots (.259) on 1-of-12 three-point shooting.

Jalen Ricks (two points, two rebounds) saw his first action since Nov. 12 and logged 13 minutes. Quincy Ballard (four points, three rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes) and Shammah Scott (six points, career-high 31 minutes) also took on expanded roles.

Walton was a catalyst in his 20 minutes, making 4-of-7 shots, but picked up three first-half fouls and missed another nine-minute stretch of the second half due to injury. He left the game at the 11:57-mark with the Shockers up 42-36 and returned at the under-4:00 timeout with his team down 49-46.

Walton's presence gave WSU a temporary lift. Ballard hit a pair of free throws and Porter put the Shockers back in front with 2:12 to play (50-49) on a pull-up jumper in the lane.

However, WSU came up empty on each of its last four trips down the court and ended the game with three straight turnovers.

Nowell made the second of two free throws to tie it at 50 with 1:52 remaining, then added five more points for the final margin.

The loss snapped an eight-game non-conference road winning streak for WSU – one shy of the school record set in 1954.

The Shockers play their next four games in Wichita, beginning next Saturday against Longwood (3 p.m. CT, ESPN+) and continuing Tuesday, Dec. 13 against Mississippi Valley State (7 p.m. CT, ESPN+).
