CLEMSON, S.C. – A one-run double in the bottom of the fourth was the deciding factor as No. 17 Auburn (40-16) came up short in a pitcher's duel versus No. 14 Clemson (41-15) in Saturday's winner's bracket contest at McWhorter Stadium.

Earning her 35th start of the season to set the program's single season record for starts, sophomore Maddie Penta (24-10) tossed the complete game, scattering three hits and a pair of walks. The right-hander struck out six to bring her season total to 269 to tie Anna Thompson (2009) for fifth in Auburn single-season history.

Auburn out-hit Clemson at the plate, but all four of Auburn's base hits fell for singles. Clemson strung back-to-back doubles with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Marissa Guimbarda's game-winning double was snow coned in the outfield, but Auburn was unable to secure the catch.

Having its best scoring chance in the top of the sixth, Auburn loaded the bases with a Clemson error and a pair of singles from freshman Jessie Blaine and junior Lindsey Garcia.

Auburn got the pop fly to center, but the ball did not travel deep enough to force the tag up. A fielder's choice at second base retired the scoring threat.

Sophomore Makayla Packer got on board in the top of the seventh with a fielder's choice before swiping second to move the tying run into scoring position, but Clemson starting pitcher Valerie Cagle shut the door with a strikeout.

The steal was Packer's 20th of the season to stand fourth in Auburn single season history. Packer now stands tied for fifth with Kim Blair (1997-99) for career steals.
