BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke baseball team tallied 15 hits, including nine extra-base hits, but came up short in a slugfest against Virginia Tech, 15-11, at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Duke (22-30, 10-18 ACC) and Virginia Tech (38-11, 17-9) hit five and six home runs, respectively. Both teams matched with nine extra-base hits, eight walks allowed and eight strikeouts. Duke out-hit Virginia Tech 15-14 but left nine men on base compared to four Hokies left on base.

Offensively, Duke was led by sophomores Alex Stone and Luke Storm and graduate student Chris Crabtree. Stone finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs, his second multi-home run game of the season. Storm went 3-for-4 at the plate and was a triple shy of the cycle while Crabtree was a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5.

Junior Marcus Johnson started on the mound for the Blue Devils. Johnson allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits and two walks. The Fontana, Calif., native fanned two batters. Opposing Johnson, Virginia Tech's Griffin Green allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk.

Duke rattled off back-to-back hits to open the game, a foretaste of what was to come. Rookie Alex Mooney laced a single to right followed by a single from junior Graham Pauley. Mooney scored on a groundout to open the scoring. The Hokies responded with three runs in the bottom of the first.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the top of the second on a two-run home run by Stone. Virginia Tech scored another in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, 4-3.

Duke plated four runs in the fourth inning before allowing one run in the bottom half to take the lead, 7-5. Duke's four runs were highlighted by another two-run home run by Stone, a fielder's choice and a single by Storm.

The Blue Devils increased their lead to 9-5 in the top of the fifth inning, but Virginia Tech scored six in on five hits, including three home runs, to take a 11-9 lead through five innings. Duke's runs in the top half of the frame came from a leadoff home run by Crabtree and stellar baserunning by Mooney on an errant throw.

The Blue Devils and Hokies traded runs in the sixth inning before Virginia Tech added three in the seventh to increase its lead, 15-10. Storm hit a leadoff home run in the sixth to score the run.

In the ninth inning, freshman Devin Obee entered the game and hit a pinch-hit home run to attempt to rally the Blue Devils, but Virginia Tech closed the game.

Graduate student southpaw Matt Dockman stabilized the game for the Blue Devils. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter in two scoreless innings of work.

Duke and Virginia Tech return to the diamond on Friday for game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
