LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team adapted to schedule and location changes to compete on Saturday (April 30) at the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at Burcham Park against in state rival, Kansas.
The Wildcats won three out of five races against Kansas. The Jayhawks won the Sunflower Showdown overall with a final point total of 15-7.
"We were able to win three out of the five races and that was good to see," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "Our first two boats didn't have the best fortune, but we can build from today. Looking ahead we know what we need to do to improve."
The first win of the day was in the first varsity 4+. The lineup consisted of sophomore coxswain Sydney Smith alongside sophomores Lindsey DeVreugd, Alyssa Buettner and freshmen Anita Eckhardt and Catie Wood.
"We had one of our best starts of the season and I think that set us up well for the rest of the race," said DeVreugd. "After that we just worked to get a lead and once we got the lead, we kept pushing to maintain the distance."
The Wildcats finished in 8:09.422, winning by a margin of more than 9 seconds.
"For me this weekend was really about trusting the work we've done this season and trusting all the other girls in the boat to get us through the finish line first," said DeVreugd.
The second varsity 4+ earned K-State's second victory of the day with a time of 8:26.057. The all-freshman boat consisted of coxswain Sarah Schrage, Gracyn McClain, Madelyn Barrett, Jayden Brandt and Annika Senn.
"We had a strong start that put us ahead early, but we knew that we had to keep pushing in order to keep it," said Barrett. "We were able to make some strong pushes along the way that set us up for our finish. When we were in the last 500, we were able to make a shift and do it together."
K-State defeated the Jayhawks by more than 8 seconds with Kansas finishing at 8:34.902.
"This was a solid weekend for our boat. We went in with the right mindset, knew what improvements we needed, and I think we were able to do that today," said Barrett.
The final victory for the Cats was in the third varsity 8+. The all-freshmen crew consisted of coxswain Paige Fox, Neva Roenne, Jordan Girkin, Grace Hendrickson, Kendra Hamman, Symone Simmons, Faith Gates, Chloe Daniels and Halle Fee.
"Our first 1000m of the race was rough as we were battling the winds and trying to set our boat. We were down on KU for the first half of the race, and we were just trying to gain those seats back as we approached the second half of the race," said Hendrickson. "(Paige) Fox called us into a push at the 1000-meter mark and you could really feel the boat focus back in and we started walking up on them. We kept the momentum going all the way through the 500m mark where we were head-to-head with KU. We decided to start our finish earlier than normal, around the 350, and that helped us finally pull ahead and gain a couple seats on KU. We were really pushing it and ended up walking all the way through the KU boat by the finish."
K-State finished first with a time of 7:27.005, 6 seconds faster than Kansas.
"Overall, it was a good weekend," said Girkin. "Obviously, our team wanted the trophy, but each boat is progressively improving. Our win as a boat was huge, and it gives us momentum heading into Big 12s."
The first varsity 8+, comprised of sophomore coxswain Lauren Plum, juniors Elizabeth Mummert and Maya Morrow, freshmen Rachel Harman and Madison Koller, juniors Madison Jensen and Megan Michaelis and sophomores Idallis Shaffer and Jadyn Greisen finished second with a time of 7:13.896. The Jayhawks finished in 7:06.845.
The second varsity 8+ with sophomore coxswain Kelsey Ladlie, sophomores Lauren Walker, Kaylee Kleinschmit, and Patricia Hokanson, junior Ellie Hahn, freshmen Emily Stark and Anna Ryan, sophomore Jessica Schenk, and junior Kate Odgers came in second with a time of 7:15.777.
The Wildcats will take a short break before heading off to Austin, Texas for the final race of the regular season, the 2022 Big 12 Rowing Championships on Sunday (May 15). Competition in Austin is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. CT with the 3v8+.
"Looking at the rest of the season, we're excited to put it all on the course for our last race," said Barrett. "We've put in the work all year and we are excited to bring our best to finish the season strong."
