Gone are the short-term trend charts on Ohio’s COVID-19 data site, replaced by 21-day trends - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A five-day look back at coronavirus trends is too short-sighted, especially when some data is lagging and the timing varies on when it can be confirmed, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Monday.

So instead, the governor promoted a new feature on the Ohio Department of Health’s website to track key COVID-19 trends over 21 days - reported cases, deaths, hospitalizations and admissions to hospital intensive care units.

All four graphs show things generally trending in a favorable direction over the last couple of weeks. That’s an important factor in the state’s phased-in approach to begin allowing businesses to reopen.

One spike noted by the governor was a high point on the death chart when 138 deaths were reported by the state on Wednesday.

The governor said that was because of a backlog of cases finally making it into the state’s reporting system. Last Wednesday is the only day more than 55 deaths were reported since the state began releasing coronavirus case details in early March.

A spike for cases occurred in mid-April after Ohio began targeted and extensive testing in prisons, even among inmates who had not shown systems.

During the peak of the prison test results coming in, Ohio reported over three days 1,135, 1,380 and 1,317 new cases. Otherwise, Ohio rarely has reported more than 700 new cases in a single day.
