Warriors fans seeking substantial insight into Klay Thompson’s rehab process are likely to come away disappointed after viewing “Above the Waves,” a short documentary film that premiered today.
The video, presented by Kaiser Permanente, clocks in at only six minutes, 13 seconds, and seems more interested in artsy cinematic flourishes than truly getting to the heart of what Thompson has been dealing with since he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament last June in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.
“I felt my knee shift, which I never felt before,” Thompson says of the injury that basically ended the Warriors’ hopes of pulling off an NBA Finals three-peat. “I was frustrated, but I gave that game my heart, that series, that whole season.”
From there, the film fast-forwards six months and viewers are presented with brief scenes of a doctor consultation, a glimpse of the hideous scar on his knee and his workouts at Oakland’s Laney College.
“The psychological hurdles are probably the biggest things I need to overcome,” says Thompson, who admits that he gets frustrated by all the chatter from NBA pundits insisting the Warriors’ dynasty is over.
“I’ll just be that eager to prove everyone wrong again,” he says. “That’s a good fire to have.”

Unlike last year’s Showtime documentary on DeMarcus Cousins, this film doesn’t come close to presenting a rigorous examination of the rehab process — and the sweat, frustration and dogged determination that top-flight athletes experience as they endure it.
Of course, “Above the Waves” isn’t trying to accomplish the same thing, but it could have at least delved a little deeper instead of presenting eye-rolling images of sand slipping through fingers, or water flowing over a basketball court.
Still, for fans missing NBA hoops, it’s an opportunity to check in with their beloved Splash Brother, who has hyped the video via his Twitter feed. You can view the film here.
