‘Normal People’ Fans Want To See Paul Mescal In Gucci’s Short Shorts - British Vogue

After his character’s now infamous silver chain, Normal People star Paul Mescal’s beloved Gaelic football shorts are easily the biggest conversation-starter in his wardrobe. Since the world fell in love with Connell Waldron after bingeing the show in the early weeks of lockdown, sightings of Mescal in his O’Neills shorts – which he wears to jog, to enjoy a crafty cig in the park, and to stock up on prawn cocktail crisps and pre-mixed tins of gin and tonic at his local Co-op – have repeatedly broken (or at least made severe dents in) the internet.

Now his fans are insisting the Mescal Effect is being felt in the arena of high fashion. Eagle-eyed admirers have pointed out the similarities between his GAA short shorts and Gucci’s white nylon pair from its 2020 Cruise collection. While it’s highly unlikely that the Irish actor’s snack run attire has actually made its way onto Alessandro Michele’s moodboard, the creative director probably is familiar with the most iconic TV couple to ever emerge from county Sligo. Genius fashion designers stream box sets too, you know.

The fervent online chat around Mescal’s defiantly normcore off-duty style (compare and contrast with his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones’s It-girl favourites and coveted JW Anderson tote), follows a tidal wave of interest in his ever-present on-screen accessory: Connell’s chain. Such was the fuss it caused, when Mescal raffled off one of his own chain necklaces to benefit the Irish suicide charity Pieta House, it raised more than £60,000.

Back to those Gucci shorts, Mescal himself appears rather taken with the designer spin on his real-life closet staple. When the £480 waterproof nylon swim shorts were brought to his attention on Twitter by fans keen to know if he’d been sent a pair, the actor replied that he “certainly wouldn’t say no”. Your move, Alessandro.
